Treat it with over the counter acid blockers such as tagamet or pepcid AC if it's just an occasional thing. Pepcid worked best on me and took about an hour to kick in.

What you're experiencing is acid reflux. If it keeps up, you can cause serious damage to your esophagus, even triggering cancer in some people. What happens is the small sphincter muscle at the top of your stomach stops closing completely, and the stomach contents burp back up into your esophagus.

Mine got so bad I was taking 8-10 prescription level blockers a day, like Nexium (prilosec's older cousin).

If you get heartburn 3-4 times a week, go see a gastroenerologist and tell him you suspect an acid reflux problem. If they catch it quick enough, there are several medications that will control it (Nexium, Prevacid, etc.) and a few new outpatient procedures using lasers that can tighten up your stomach spincter muscle.

Mine was pretty advanced and I needed reconstructive surgery to correct it. Thank god for the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. They performed a Nissin Fundoscopy on me, putting a loop in the top part of my stomach, kinda like the way a stink trap works in a toilet.

After suffering for 20 years with acid reflux, it completely stopped after the surgery.
