Just saw PIZZA PARADISES on Travel Channel

Before I die, I must travel to New York and Chicago if for no other reason than to eat at Ray's in Little Italy and get that Pizza Pot Pie they've been talking about.

Of course, Dallas has lots of pizza, and not just the big chain restaurants. We've got Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant, which serves up some good pizza along with reputed Mafia notoriety. They love the attention either way.

1. Damn good (but weird) cinnamon sticks in San Antonio

Don't know the name of the place. They deliver to hotels north of downtown. Served me pepperoni pizza and cinnamon sticks. The sticks came with some weird-ass CHOCOLATE dipping sauce that I can't stop thinking about. Never saw that stuff again - but it was wonderful. In a slightly weird way.

2. You know what's good for pizza?

New Haven, CT. And not very much else. But there is lots and lots and lots of thin-crust places, including two pizzerias that both say they invented the stuff.

Chocolate sauce on cinnamon sticks sounds wonderful.

4. They profiled a New Haven pizzeria on the show

Can't remember the name, but their pizzas looked delicious. Popular with college kids. Italian family, too.

And yes, that chocolate sauce was terrific. Surprised I haven't seen it anywhere else yet - maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Damned fine calzones, too. Can't get anything that good here in Atlanta.

The best in Atlanta was Rocky's...they used a brick oven, which DOES make a difference. Sadly, it's gone now...

7. Ray's pesto pizza looks scrumptious

My favorite non-chain pizza shops are all owned by Italians from New York. Coincidence? Hell, no. But I have to try some authentic Chicago deep-dish someday.

There was one pizza/pasta shop over by Parkland owned by an Albanian/Kosovar guy, and his stuff was top notch. One of the few places in Dallas I know of where you could find canoli. Unfortunately, his business dropped off. I still miss him.

Rocky's was owned by a guy named Bob Russo, originally from NY...he committed suicide a few years back, sadly, and the restaurant closed after that...shame, really. I HAVE been to a few Greek places that come close, but, yeah, it seems that Italians from NY make the best pizzas...

My Dad's family is from "Chambersberg" and Aunt Millie and Uncle Doc had their house on Hamilton Avenue right adjacent to Columbus Park.

15. Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant opened in 1947

Joe Campisi and his brothers were too cheap to redo the sign of the previous tenant, the Egyptian Restaurant. They just added their name to the sign.

Joe was number 2 in the Dallas mob, he reported to New Orleans.

It's a true fact that Jack Ruby ate dinner there the night before the JFK deal.

Joe Campisi was also Ruby's first visitor in the Dallas Jail.

When dining there always ask for the old historic part of the building and avoid the new dining room. Some of the best food and service in Dallas.

They also have take out and delivery pizza in the Kroger across the street.

Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Cici's, etc. It's hard to go wrong with pizza.

But you're right - authentic is a far cry from mass-produced stuff you can get on any street corner. That's one reason why I should visit Chitown and/or NYC someday.
