Birth Order and Names

According to birth order research, first borns and only child like to be called their full names rather than nicknames while the babies of the family like nicknames instead of full names. This has appeared accurate with most people I have asked, but I'm curious, does it apply to you?

Sorry middles, there does not appear to be any preference.

1. No, I'm the oldest, and my kid is an only.

Neither of us care that much about our names.

Though, I did want everyone to call her by her full name at first.

2. Doesn't work for me.

I'm the firstborn and I go by "Rich" instead of "Richard".

My younger sister doesn't factor in. Her given name is "Leigh". There's really no nickname for that.

I also have a much younger brother, "John". Ditto.

...and I have an even younger brother, "Alex". His given name is "Alex", not "Alexander" or some such.

Actually, my brother's name (he's the oldest) is Richard, but he goes by Rick - so another one against the OP's thought.

but my name is one that you really can't make an nickname out of.

4. If you want a nickname

just make up something silly for your friends that does not have to be related to your actually name. Some of my friends tried calling me Perky because I'm the happy one in our group, but as a only child, I quickly vetoed that.

5. All of us girls had nick names

Jennifer Joanne was always Jo, or JoJO
Cahterine Marie was always Cathy or Sissie (because she cried all the time as a baby)
Clara Ann was allways called Clarabell, snotbox or snake in the grass
And Patricia Lynn was always Patty or Carrot top(redhead)

My mother even had a name for us as a group. MULPA's, she told us it was polish for little demons.

What we were/are called, very much depended on our parents mood.

6. Doesn't work for me

I'm the first, and prefer Nick to Nicholas, though Nicholas doesn't really bother me.

My brother is Jason, and as far as I know he's fine with that, though some of his friends in high school called him Jay.

7. Not accurate for me

I'm a first-born, and though my first name does not lend itself to a nickname, as often as not my family calls me by my initials. And I have always intended my first-born to be called by a shortened version of his first name.

8. Hmmm, not sure how to answer this.

I'm the baby of my family, and almost everyone calls me by my full first name. However, many of my friends call me by my last name, but that was also true of my brother. It's an easy, one-syllable last name rather than a three-syllable first name, so that's probably why. But the oldest, my sister, actually went by Steph most of the time, rather than Stephanie. Does that count as a nickname? If so, I guess the opposite is true with my family, if you don't count using the last name as a nickname.

Though I am happy with nicknames that aren't based on my first name. But if you use my first name, use the whole thing.

to be called "Will" rather than "William". But I use "William" as a professional name; most of my articles have that byline.

Then again, perhaps a Jr. might be called by his full name to differ him from his father, who might not use his full name.

I'm a first born and the onlyl person who calls me by my full name is the wifey.

24. Not in my family

I'm the youngest (of 2) and go by a nickname.

But my older brother also goes by a diminuitive - of his middle name.

25. Fits in my family

My sister is the oldest. We used a nickname with her growing up, but around 12 she decided she never wanted to go by that again and she goes by her full name now.

I'm a middle and I go by both my full name and nick name pretty much the same - no preference.

My brother is the youngest and exclusively goes by his nickname.

My husband's family is the same - his older sister only goes by her full name and he only goes by his nickname.
