Need advice on copyrighting images.

I have two cartoon images that I would like to protect with copyrights but I checked a service that does it online, and it's too expensive. Does anyone know how I might go about protecting my images without having to fork over a lot of dough that I obviously don't have?
(no star for same reason)I would like to put them on T-shirts eventually to try to make some extra money, but I'm afraid someone might take my ideas who is more sophisticated than I am when it comes to marketing, etc. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. BTW-the cartoons are directly related to our cause! Thanks in advance for any help.:hi:

2. I was going to say the same thing

and you can copyright a whole group of work for the year instead of individual works...saves money....( such as "works for 2004-2005", send copies of all work in group, as one copyright)
