What's your most irrational fear?
Yes, we're all afraid of the Bushbots, but I'm talking about a fear that just makes no sense whatsoever in real life. I've actually got two.

1. Flapping wings on a bird. I'm a nature lover, so I adore birds. However, get one close to me with its wings flapping... forget about it. I start to freak out.

2. Zombies of the George Romero "Night of the Living Dead" variety. Yes, they're fictional, but I can't get my mind around the fact that there probably won't be a zombie uprising someday. Oh man, that would really blow. I don't want to have to kill my zombie neighbors, or even worse, becoming a zombie myself.

What's yours?

3. Me somehow tripping on the train platform, falling on the tracks...
and getting hit by a CTA train.

Another one...someone pushing me on the tracks (I don't know why anyone would dislike me that much), said train hitting me.

5. My two...
1. Drowning: I can swim, but everytime I go tubing in the summer I usually get sucked under at one point. Well, maybe that one isn't irrational....
2. Being buried alive: I can't even watch movies where someone is buried under sand or grain (that scene in "Witness" where Danny Glover gets buried under the grain in that silo gets me everytime). If a scene with someone in a coffin, alive, in the ground, comes on I have to leave the room.

12. Worms.
Don't mind snakes or centipedes, but worms....ugh. They're so gooey and slimy. I will never touch on, and I seriously scream if I accidently step on one after it rains. Even the worms that crinkle up in hot weather disgust me.

15. maybe some fear paulists
I doubt many fear Christians. There aren't that many around. "Evangelicals" do not follow the words of Christ, they follow the addendums of Paul. The Gospels by themselves are a beautiful thing, too bad that most religious leaders see little profit in trying them.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

14. I think its domination by authority...
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 05:21 PM by HereSince1628
I believe that at a subconscious level I find it to be a threat to my existance. Consequently, when I experience it I strike out (well figuratively) to protect myself without forethought.

That virtually reflexive, completely uncontrolled response has wrecked my life. Too bad I am not a great artist where it would make doing my autobiography colorful.

Sometimes I wonder if I am actually some alternate personality protecting the "other" me from the world.

You can call me Sybill...but ya doesn't haves to call me Johnson!

19. There have been a couple days that I've had to pinch myself
To make sure that I was alive. There have been some mornings that I've been tired in a different way and pretty much don't feel anything normal. I figure that feeling pain is a good indication that I am alive. I wouldn't think that a ghost could see his/her reflection in the mirror either. Just giving you a couple ways to check so you won't have to be afraid.

18. Ladders
Not heights, ladders. I've jumped out of airplanes, gone hanggliding, rock climbing, climbed cellular antennas, climbed water towers, flown search & rescue in the military where I was lowered onto boats with a winch and never had a problem. Give me a six-foot stepladder and I get the shakes on the second step. I've never figured it out exactly, because climbing things doesn't bother me unless it's a ladder.

20. I'm afraid of getting arrested
and the cops putting me in handcuffs. I'm a middle-aged mother of two who have been pulled over for the first time this past winter. They were doing random drug checks. The officer looked in the window and I was white as a sheet, my hands spread apart on the steering wheel and my eyes bugging out. He did a double take and asked me to open the window and to do so I had to open the door cuz my arms are so short. I thought he was going to think I was going for a gun and was going to shoot me in the head. And to be completely honest, I think he was more surprised than I.

I never told anyone this until I mentioned it to my husband. He laughed until he peed, but I worry about it still.

23. I am too
I never have gotten pulled over and I don't know if I could take it if I did. That of course would probably raise more suspicion and lead to even more anxiety causing stuff.

21. How irrational? How seriously?
I am afraid of suddenly dropping dead. Some people would think that is irrational, but it happens everyday. I am less seriously afraid of the very irrational fear of dying of spontaneous human combustion.
I am extremely afraid of both snakes and geese. Those fears might not be so irrational though.

25. Things in the dark....
The things that are going to come around the corner, jump out and grab me, etc., etc. Paralyzing if I'm in the house and all the lights go off, and I can't put my back up against a wall. Totally irrational, and dumb. But then, that's why it's a phobia...

27. Giving someone food poisoning
I entertain a lot and do part time catering and after I work w/ meat of any kind I clean everything the meat came into contact with or that I've touched w/ 10% bleach. I won't use any utensil that dropped on the floor until it's been washed in hot soapy water etc. Most of the time I'm feeding healthy young adults so I really have little to fear... still.
