Want a Referendum for the 'Homo'/Marriage Amendment?
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 10:45 PM by intrepid_wanderer
???
Am I the only one who wants one?

I think the debate and number of people that it would bring into democratic involvement would be ideal! And the outcome... I'd like a tallied account of whatever it would be.

If it goes wrong (in my eyes), we can correct it as we did the 18th...

Deep thoughts?

(Guess I am the only one... <sniffle sniffle... No replies in 15 minutes :( Awhhhh... )

1. My problem with that ...
Given the state of the nation, it would be difficult to pass a referendum IN FAVOR of gay marriage. Frankly, I don't want to set around then and wait until it gets "corrected" at some future date.

It took nearly a century and a civil war to "correct" the issue of slavery in the U.S. Add another century on to that before we saw any sort of civil rights for blacks.

Suppose that instead of enacting civil rights laws, Johnson had said, "I'll just let the country decide" and left it up to voters. Would we even now have civil rights?

What's ironic is that Bush decries "activist judges," but were it not for activist judges, would we still have Jim Crow and segregation laws on the books in some states? If Bush had been born 50 years earlier, he'd have been handing out axe handles with Lester Maddox, voting for Strom Thurmond on the Dixiecrat ticket, and helping Bull O'Connor turn the hoses on "those uppity knee-grows."

2. a Referendum...
would be a vote/decision AGAINST allowing gay marriage...

I think that's a lot different in the minds of people (foes included) than IN FAVOR.

Wouldn't it be the impetus for discussion that would be healthy culturally?

3. In a health culture ... maybe ...
but in the current culture of fear and hate, i don't seen the right wing engaging in dialog when they're so much more comfortable with using demagoguery the discussion would consist of "The Bible says ... that's good enough for me ... so let's just start building 'camps'."

Maybe that a cynical view of the level of public discourse, but in the words of my favorite t-shirt: I'm not cynical, just experienced.

4. I don't think we need a referendum, What we need are some
"activist judges" to make it legal everywhere, so that there would be to many married gay people to just make it go away.

5. I'd rather
they didn't have that argument...

... I'm sick of hearing it!

6. I don't even think its an argument, I refuse to allow them to take
good words and make them bad.

Activists are wonderful, they do a great many things, and they can try to turn it into a bad word all they want.

I'm sick of people allowing them to do it. We need to stop them from twisting words and calling them on all the bullshit.

Do I have a second!

7. I live in Kansas.
And here in the great state of Kansas, it appears that an amendment to prohibit same sex marriages and any sort of civil union between any other than a woman and a man will be on our ballot on April 5. I fear it will pass.

I am sorry, and embarrassed.

This issue, vital to the health of so many relationships and to our society, cannot be decided by a bunch of... fools. Just because they feel insecure, just because they feel threated by who knows what, just because they are being told what to do, just because same sex relationships make them feel all "funny inside", just because they don't feel their own relationships are "special" unless all others are prohibited from enjoying the benefits of a civil recognition of partership...

Majority doesn't rule. But, it may here in the great state of Kansas. I hang my head and apologize for what is bound to happen. I truly hope I am wrong. I will eat a crow pie and share the recipe.

9. Waving to put out
Hi put out.

I'm just across the state line in Missouri (by a block and a half). I can truly sympathize since I saw it happen here in Missouri last August.

Looks like the best we can hope for is getting the issues to court and hoping the judges weren't appointed by BushCo.

8. I want an amendment that guarantees the
sanctimony of marriage. I am not concerned with who gets married (except for oxyrush and newt), but that it is maintained and that divorce is reduced. No more cheating, lying, etc. Its the commitment that matters!
