Didn't watch SOTU, don't care...listening to Zairean guitarist Franco now.
It's a collection of recordings that a man named Franco, from Zaire, made between 1972 and 1974. Good stuff...this guy can really play! His style is completely individual; it reminds me a bit of King Sunny Ade's Jim Reeves-isms, but more melodic.

I really could not give half a flying shit about the SOTU speech, nor Obama's supposed autograph grab, nor about Pelosi's reply, nor the MSM pro-Bush spin.

I'm enjoying myself right now. Got the night off, eating some white grapes, and chilling out to some mellow African rock. Life is good

If you're smart you'll turn that shit off and regroup in the morning, instead of constantly bringing your blood pressure to a boil.

2. Hear, hear. One can only handle so much outrage fatigue.
It's not like anything the Snakehandler-in-Chief can say anymore can shock me. He's already so past the point of no return it's not worth it to monitor his every mispoken syllable.

We already know what we have to do: hold the Dem party leaders' collective feet to the fire.

So everyone relax, do something you enjoy, and keep the fight hot in the morning.

3. RE: Franco....
It's a French label, Sonodisc. Bought it as an import. Label art's real cheap, no liner notes.....but Bob Christgau likes his 80's material, so I thought I'd give his 70's material a spin as a warm-up. It's pretty damn good! Not as good as some of the Ethiopian big band jazz I've heard from the same era, but his guitar style is definitely distinctive.

5. Hey, Koolzip, if that stuff floats yr dinghy,
have you ever checked out a Nigerian (I think) band of that era called Blo? I unconditionally recommend. Jammy and Krautrockish, but more African-sounding, obviously. Badass.

6. Am vaguely acquainted with Blo.
Heard their stuff over at a friend's house in Nashville. Liked it, but couldn't find vinyl nor CDs of theirs in stores.

I'm also digging a current African band called Antibalas. They have a fucking INCREDIBLE new album out called "Who Is this America?" that can rank comfortably among Fela's best works.

7. Antibalas have a stellar rep,
and they play Cle like annually, yet I still heavn't checked 'em out. Must do so next time. I'll definitely put "Who Is This America?" on my short list for the tax-refund record shopping spree, thanks for the tip.

The Blo stuff's been reissued. Might be worth looking again.

10. Really....it's essential. If I hadn't bought it last week, I would have
placed it at the very top of my top ten of 2004. It's THAT good.

12. And the Gallagher Brothers are neither.
I kid. They've got a few good tunes, but always seemed full of torpor and uneeded weight to me.

And they're not as good as the Beatles; this is not opinion, it's fact.
