Generally they're made of cotton...And as for the second question, not really. I mean they're just comfortable clothing that usually runs down to the ankles. They sometimes have pockets on the sides or even on the chest. I used to wear them all the time when I went to the mosque as a child. All I can say is that they're so damn comfy its sick...I'll wear one around the house occasioanlly when I just feel like relaxing.

I would guess that their derivation is either something practical (like a workman's sweat rag), or protective. I feel quite naked without one.

Also in a formal-dress environment they're the only place for self-expression. Plain suit, white shirt (or pale colour), black shoes, beautiful woven silk tie - it all makes sense really.

Haven't worn one for 15 years.

They're a hangover from the days when men used to use a kind of scarf to close the tops of their "shirts". Then we started using buttons which made the "tie" superfluous. Absolutely useless thing, the tie.

16. It's all about self expression.

As I sit here in my slacks and white shirt, the only thing that distinguishes me from my co-workers in a crowd is my tie (which today is black, with a pretty gold and purple loop pattern). For many professional people stuck in a world of shirt and slack dress codes, the tie is the only outlet we have to be creative and individualistic.

BTW, Friday is kids day in my house, when I let my kids choose the tie I wear to work (I own almost 40 ties). Last Friday I wore a Scooby-Doo tie, and this week my son is swearing that he's finally going to get me to wear that YuGiOh tie he bought for me last Christmas. He'll have to argue that one out with my daughter though, since she wants me to wear my bright purple one again (I love the purple one).
