They call this place "Demunder."
(That's a new one, have even the Freepers used it?)

Their leader is the Georgia "newspaper editor," that was tombstoned after only 5 posts, 3 of which were attacks on me.

10. FidoNet

FidoNet is what a lot of people used for networked discussion groups before access to the Internet became so widely available, back when BBSes (Bulleting Board Systems) were all the rage. It still has a lively base of users. At its most fundamental level, it is a network of message forums among BBSes.

It works similar to the Usenet in that there is no central server or database of messages, only without the speed due to the lack of constant connectivity. Basically, if you have a BBS, you can have a message forum that you "echo" to anyone who wants to grab it. At a set interval, once or twice a day typically but more often on some systems today, the local BBS you log-in to will contact a BBS serving as a FidoNet HUB and upload anything posted to that "echo" and downloading any new messages received by that HUB since the last time your system contacted it. Other BBSes around the country/world do the same to their local HUBS. These HUBS all communicate with one another, eventually resulting in the echo and its messages being distributed to as many BBSes as subscribe to that group/echo.

There are now ways to use the Internet for this echoing process, removing the need for sometimes expensive long distance calls to retrieve and send messages. Some FidoNet echoes are in fact "echoed" to the Usenet. There are also Internet e-mail-to-Fidonet gateways.

I could have a few details wrong since there have been many updates and refinements of the process since I frequented FidoNet groups. I once ran a BBS and pulled a few dozen echoes, back in the dark ages. I used a 9600 baud modem and made a long-distance call twice a day to update the message bases. It became rather expensive. Use of the Internet as a pathway has made it more appealing, however.
