concerning the Separation of Church and State (lounge)
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 11:11 PM by pres2032
The First Amendment states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Can you please tell me where in those lines it says the words "Separation of Church and state?" I'll answer it for you, it ain't there. So please tell me where it says that religious posts must be relegated to forums far away from your eyes? When the first congress wrote that amendment they did so not with the intention of sending those with religious beliefs out into the wilderness. They did not intend for us to be kept away from the public.

They wanted us out among the public, worshiping as we chose. Their intention with writing the first amendment was for there not to be a state religion, or one dominant religion over the others. They also intended for people of religious beliefs to worship in any way they wanted and to believe in any god they wanted, or in no god at all.

So, tell me one instance where someone, other than a troll, tried to institute an official DU religion. Tell me one instance, other than a troll, where someone was advocating that one religion is better than another. The only people who seem to be trying to infringe on other's religious practices are the same ones who will scream and shout about the first amendment.

If you wanted to have a demonstration in a town square against the war or dubya and the town council ordered you to take it to a park in the outskirts of town, you would be up in arms. You would be bitching all over DU about how your first amendment rights were violated by bush-loving fascists and calling on all DUers to call their congressmen. But yet the minute you see a group people praying in that same town square, you would be the first to scream at them to move to the park on the outskirts of town. See the hypocrisy?

We're not asking you to accept our beliefs. You are free to believe in any god of your choosing and you are free to not believe in a god. You are also free to flame away at this thread, but if you are free to scream and shout in the town square, shouldn't we be free to pray in that same town square if we wanted to? In other words, can't we all get along?

We are all united in our hatred towards Bush. Why don't we embrace that? Why is it so hard to see through our differences and see our similarities, our want of peace, the end of poverty, equality for all. Can't we all get along?

1. I'm new here, but there does seem to be a lot of infighting.
What's up with that anyway?
