Something that bugs me about seeing bands perfom live on TV:
The drummer always brings his full kit, even if he doesn't use it. Y'ever notice that? I remember seeing the Dave Matthews Band play on Leno a few months ago, and Carter Beauford brought along his ENTIRE arsenal of drums and percussion for ONE freakin' song. He only used half of the cymbals he brought along, and hardly did more than three tom rolls.....why not give your drum tech a break and bring the shit you know you'll play?

Duran Duran wewre just on that Carson Daly show, and Roger taylor had his full stage show drum set set up, for "Hungry Like the Wolf." That song doesn't even have a freakin' roll in it at all!

This bugs me especially, because as a drummer who had to carry his kit from gig to gig, I can tell you from experience that it's no damn fun to cart those big bastards around. If I knew I'd only play one or two tunes, I wouldn't bring my full set up. I mean, those toms are BIG....and you'll only use them to play six notes, tops, on 'em per song.

When I see hiphop/r&B acts do this, it REALLY bugs me! Why bring your rack toms if you're just going to play a snare hit every once in a while whilst the turntablist does his magic?

Maybe I just have too much time on my hands.

2. You don't take the strings off a guitar you are not using
A drum kit is an instrument to the drummer. The placement is critical to the music. Take some of the drums out and you change the nature of the kit.

Add in the fact that the drum kit is also the persona representing the drummer. Ever actually scene a drummer up close? The muppets got it right.

3. Dude: I AM a drummer!
A good drummer can adapt to any kit. One of my favorite John Bonham stories was told by Dave Mattacks; Bonham went over to Mattacks's house and Mattacks wanted Bonham to show him a tricky beat he played on "The Crunge." There were no full kits available, but Mattacks's kid had a little "child's" starter drum kit...Bonham got on, and managed to produce his signature sound even on that little kid's toy drum set.

EVERY drummer should be like that.

7. Well, jp, he's got me on that one.
I've never really scene any drummer up close. Usually I'm the fuckin' guy hittin' 'em.
