I cannot believe the things people ask for in my freecycle group.

Queen size bed (new please)
Lap top (with XP if possible :eyes:)
A car (no later than 1995)

And on and on...

What is being given away today...

A yellow seashell plastic soap dispenser.

A collection of bread twist ties....

I kid you not. Boy oh boy. It's a good idea that many of the people in my area seem to want to take advantage of.

3. It's almost irritating to open my email. It's gotten to where I don't
want to give anything away, because I'm afraid I'll get sued for misrepresentation of the product or something. I thought we'd be helping each other out and it seems otherwise.

8. You must live in a sucky area....
I usually ignore the "I WANTs." I got rid of a lot of stuff via FreeCycle. I upgraded my shredder, and gave someone my old one. SHe was soooo grateful! She even gave me a little handmade craft - not that I wanted anything in exchange.

I also got rid of 3 working printers and a scanner.

Strangely though. Wondering if the phrase "One person's garbage is another persons treasure," I asked if anyone wanted my body wash, because I bought a bunch when they came out, and I am over the fad. Several people replied! So I got rid of those, plus some candles.

So some of the people do ask for impossible things. And some of the stuff offered is just junk. But some is good.

Thanks for reminding me to go check what people are offering ;)

9. I would have taken the candles.
and yes I live in a sucky area. ;) Lots of freepers on the one board. They have to be reminded to stay on subject with their posts instead of sending chain letters through. :hi:

10. I still have more candles to get rid of !
I know someone else was talking about starting a DU Freecycle: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=2565546

But the postage might be prohibitive, I think.

Anyway, come out to Boston and visit me, I may be having another Decluttering OCD experience at that time, and may want to get rid of stuff. :) Did I tell you I have 4 computers !

:hi:

11. Oh one more thing...
I had a Super 8 Video projector from the 1970s. All my Super 8 film has been transferred to VHS.

So I offered it on Freecycle, and said, "I know it's extremely unlikely anyone wants this, but I have this Super 8 VIdeo projector."

I got a reply, 2 minutes later! A guy in film school wanted it. I would have never guessed! I kept saying, "It's not 8 mm, it's Super 8. You really want it??" I couldn't believe it

I felt good giving it to a poor college student who could use it.

12. wow -- really must depend on your area!
I would say that more are about giving than getting in my group. One very nice lady, who gave me some very nice stuff, mentioned that some items weren't claimed and she had to donate them. A lot of people are involved in it down here for the free hauling, I think.

No one expects any new beds or computers but older computers and mattresses are given away routinely. A couple of vans or trucks have been given away. I tried to get a couple of futons but they were always claimed by someone else first.

A lot of dogs have been given away for some reason. I won't give away an animal if I don't know the taker, because it just weeds out the lowlifes if you ask for a financial investment in an animal. But there's a dog over-population problem here, so at least some dogs are finding homes.

A fair amount of plants are given away, and I was the winner of a nice plumeria that is already leafing out nicely under lights.

I don't give away small stuff, because I also sell items, but I do give away good stuff that is too heavy to ship or that I can't otherwise figure out how to sell. I've gotten back about the same number of items that I've given out, and I've got more room in my attic, because the items I gave were huge and the items I claimed were small.

However, I've never tried the "seek" function. I have only tried claiming what is being offered anyway.

Hmm.

A collection of bread twist ties...

I presume you are kidding, but if not, that's really tacky.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
