her company is closing up shop, the last company she worked did too because they couldn't compete with foreign competition.

1. Sorry - I know just how hard that is -
and, my husband was laid off twice in one year -

The first time his company was bought by foreigners, who then proceeded to lay off all US employees.

The second time his company decided to oursource all IT work.

I'm starting to believe we will never have the future we planned and now I think we'll never even be able to match the level our parents attained.

Our future has been hijacked by greedy corporations and their government allies.

She moved back in with her parents the first time, they are wonderful people. she's pretty down about it but thinks she can get her old part-time job back and maybe get another one.

4. Yes, the squeeze is on
My hubby is in IT as well. Luckily, he has a new job that pays fairly well. But, we have accepted a 60% drop in income overall, since 1999. And, yet we're thankful for this, as we know that it could disappear anytime.

7. Hi Quakerfriend !
We spoke on this same topic a while ago.

Glad to hear your IT hubby is working again.

But I agree - the pay for these jobs is spiraling downward with each move. Not exactly what we all thought when we took out our student loans. Back then, there was a bright future and the ability to repay quickly at the end of the tunnel, huh?

10. Hi cyberpj!
:hi:

And, there used to be stock options to boot!

We might have to move to India!

Sadly, many of the hi tech folks my husband worked with several yrs ago have gone back. Not too easy on the family. But, atleast they have somewhere to go to!

2. So sorry to hear that.
I hate hearing how great our economy is doing. It's like your friend and the others who lose their jobs don't exist to this regime.

Believe me, I understand how your friend must feel. Hubby went through 2 plant closings.

I hope your friend is able to find something soon.

Since moving back to Michigan from Salt Lake City in 1997, I am on my fifth job....the previous four companies have all shut their doors. All had been opened and running for over 25 to 60 years. My current job (since Nov.) seems to be doing ok...but, they just laid off 7 employees today. We had about 40 people until today... more layoffs are in the works.... fortunately my position is safe for the time being.... but.... I have come to expect shutdowns.

6. What did she do?
What skills does she have? Are there new ones she can acquire? Is returning to school an option? There are an amazing number of vocational programs out there, especially through the local community colleges.

Wishing her the best.

8. Sorry to to hear this, pj.........................
It seems to be going around. I just got laid-off last week; the second time in as many years. And like you, I worry that I will not even come close to achieving the level of financial success that my parents did. I'm 37 and I'm not even close to the financial security that my folks had when they were 27 (and thats not setting the bar very high, my dad was a social worker, and my mom is a radiological tech).

Good luck to your friend.

11. My blood still boils
as I recall *co's response to a question during the debates about how he would help those who have lost their jobs due to outsourcing:

..."I'd send um back to schooooool...for re training"

Yeah, RIGHT! Tell that to all the PhDs out their who have lost their jobs!!
