When I come across things I find offensive,
whether it's on TV, or something for sale, or a website, or whatever, do you know what I do?

I ignore it.

As long as the show/product/website/whatever isn't breaking the law, I ignore it. I turn my eyes from it/don't buy it/turn the channel/go to a different website.

Is that what you do?

2. No. If I did that then shelves throughout America would still be stocked
with Aunt Jemima dolls, black Sambo and other racist artifacts.

9. If I find something to be tasteless or offensive be it to me or another
or racist or bigoted, I open my mouth, use my purchase power, write letters or the like...sometimes I'm right..sometimes I make as ass out of myself..either way is fine with me.

I believe my first amendment rights are as precious as anyone's so I USE them. Live and let live is fine..to a point. Some things are worthy of protest.

10. I agree with your last sentence.
I guess it is a matter of simply finding that "fine line."

11. Sure...my gripe is that we as humans live in the language we speak
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 07:32 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
Literally we do..therefore..if your language is filled with cunts, whores, retards, niggers, spics and the like..then the WORLD you look out into contains cunts, whores, retards, niggers and the like..and THAT is the world you create for everyone around you.

Now..when it comes to offensiveness, I am glad that Amos and Andy are no longer en vogue. YEs it CAN go overboard, but that is a TWO way street.

(on edit..and I was using those terms to make a point NOT for shock treatment)

19. I've seen some of those at auction recently
Disturbing to see they're still around. Little male and female slaves. The lady holds a plate. The man holds a lantern. Ceramic.

30. "Black Americana" is a collectible category.
Collections can range from the "offensive" items, through mementos of black entertainers & athletes, to engravings of slave auctions.

Many of the collectors are African-American.

7. No, I whine and piss and moan about it and threaten to sue
and ask the government to help protect me from having to see anything that I disagree with or that makes me feel bad.

I also like to come to the Lounge and claim oppression and scream and cry and shed tears and have a total tantrum about it.

Please don't assume that everyone can just turn it off or ignore it or look elsewhere. Not all of us are capable of doing that. Some of us haven't matured beyond the toddler level, and need to the government, or the DU administration, or the city council, or whatever, to take care of us for us because we're such hypersensitive children that we cry.

8. I pester the FCC and call right-wing talk radio shows...
Then I write long boring letters to the editor talking about how things are going to change now that we have a good Christian man in the White House. Yep....

12. I'm with NSMA on this. Some things you have to speak up about.
Other things you brush off.

And sorry Rabrrrrrr, but I think it's anything but toddleresque to speak your mind when you think a thing is wrong.

they ask you to think about what you are doing and saying and its effects on others...and I LOVE Rabrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

16. Certainly, those things that are morally offensive should be challenged
Racism - sexism - genocide - coups - those sorts of things. But I took the original post to be talking about the minor, inconsequential things, like people offended because others are talking about eating meat, or being offended about a TV show so you call your senator to hold a hearing, or someone says "I like Ted Nugent" so you alert on them, and blah blah blah - when it's stuff that isn't hurting anyone at all. That's the kind of silly behavior I label as toddleresque.

24. You would be correct in your assumption, though I didn't really
make it clear that I was talking about more minor things.

Where I see injustice, I DO speak up, loud and clear.

13. It really depends on the material
If it's bigoted I usually complain about it. I can't stand to let people breed more haters without trying to do something. Well, I could but then I wouldn't like me much.

If it's just tasteless I usually ignore it. If it's just stupid I poke fun at it. :)

20. I don't agree that the law is a moral compass.
It often happens that perfectly legal, or quasi-legal, behavior deserves outrage and action--such as the warmongering you rightly reference in your .sig.

I often ignore offensive behavior, and may be more likely to make public complaints on behalf of those I believe are unlikely or unable to speak up (the use of the pejorative "retard" being my favorite example).

25. Well, see there's where the line is for me, too.
I guess I should have made the OP more clear. I wasn't thinking of examples of injustice that offend me. Of course I am going to take action, as they are not only offensive but unjust.

And speaking up for those who can't is something I consider so important that I think it is what defines whether you are truly human or not.

I was thinking of offensive to YOU, but not illegal, not unjust, etc. Guess I should have been more clear. Sorry!

26. usually start running my mouth...
for example, for Halloween a few years ago, some woman in this town dressed as Aunt Jemima. As if it wasn't enough, she did "black face." :wtf:

To boot, the local paper ran a photo of it.

I made a point of showing it to everyone who crossed my path. Wrote a letter to the local paper too.

Yes, shit like this still goes on. :grr:

Sometimes you let it slide... till it goes to far. Then you YELL.

I mean how do you ignore offensive stuff that is being posted about you or the ideas you believe in, on another site? Do you just leave?

I personally can't keep my mouth shut. You must be a stronger person than me.
