7. Not to start flames or anything, but who would put macs in a lab?
I suppose that you could do it now that most instruments have their own built-in computer and serial communication is enough for data acquisition. But Macs in a lab are like elevators in an outhouse, they just don't belong.

When I was doing chemistry, (not all that long ago) the most common set-up was an A to D board in the computer reading a voltage signal off the instrument. The only way you do that with a Mac of that era was to have a fanatical Mac person around - Apple didn't want anyone adding anything to their computers. It was virtually impossible to buy what you needed off the shelf, you had to make it.

On the other hand, there were numerous boards and plenty of software to run your instruments on a PC platform. Since much of my early computer work was data collection in a chemistry lab, I considered Macs to be expensive toys for word processing. It doesn't surprize me in the least to see Windows in a lab, but a Mac in a lab is unusual enough to warrant a "WTH??" eyebrow raise, and wondering why someone bothered to interface an orphaned computer to an instrument.

The SETI programs run on Windows platforms as well, so that shouldn't stop you.

8. no no no... silly
They just transitioned from open 'user machines' to 'managed' log-ons w/o any access to install apps.

The benefit was when they finally started using wasted cycles for some 'folding' work.
