3. Angel Chicken Wings !!!! YUUUMMMM !!
Tom Yum Nur soup, and a Thai basil dish (any meat works, I like chicken. A Thai iced coffee would be yummy too - but highly caffinated.

4. If you're allergic to seafood or fish BE CAREFUL
They put "fish paste" in almost everything (for a base) and it often contains shrimp. They even put it in vegetarian dishes.

14. and peanuts ... (alittlelark and I were thinking alike on this!)
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 09:35 PM by Lisa
They often put peanuts in the sauces, or on top as a garnish. But if you're okay with that (and with seafood, as LisaM says), no probs!

I like the soups (with chicken, or shrimp -- spicy, with coconut, mushrooms and cilantro). My grad school roommate used to make great tom yum soup, but she's moved back to Chiang Mai.

Chicken with spinach, in peanut sauce, is often on the menu as an appetizer. If you aren't particularly hungry, that (with rice on the side), plus a serving of soup, is a great supper.

5. Don't order the spicy catfish!
The orange-colored sauce tastes like dogshit.

6. Depends on how you feel about spicy food
but if it were me....

Tom Yung Gung (mmmmmmmmm... hot & sour soup, made with lemon grass)
Pad Thai (noodle dish, mild)
Red Curry Chicken (very coconutty, can be spicy)

Well, those are my favorites anyway.

10. Phad Thai (or Pad Thai) is near universally acceptable
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 09:34 PM by mondo joe
Some more experienced Thai diners won't even order Phad Thai because it's so STANDARD - but it's so standard because it's tasty. Stur fried rice noodles with a tiny bit of tofu, bean sprouts and prawns (or meat).

It's better than I just made it sound.

Cashew Chicken is usually a popular item as well.

Phad Prik Khing (there are various spellings) is a good item - pork (or other meat) and green beans in a light coconut milk sauce. Have with rice.

11. Thai food is wonderful
but be careful, it can be really spicy. I mean, hot enough to melt your fillings. When the menu says something is spicy, they aren't kidding. Toam yum is good, it's a kind of soup. Massamun curry is also very good, and pad thai, a noodle dish, is very popular. Chicken satay is a sort of broiled chicken on skewers that they often serve as an appetizer. Rice noodle salad is another good one...

Darn, now I'm hungry.

15. pad Thai is very good
but Thai soups and salads are too die for. Delish..

When my family goes, we always get pud thai, a sweet and sour soup and a salad, usually cold beef and lime.

19. Pad Thai, you can't go wrong.
And some chicken satay with peanut sauce for an appetizer. And see if they have Thai Iced Tea. It's about one-quarter coconut milk and very, very tasty.
