Today our dish is a traditional fall dessert, Corn Pudding. My mother made corn pudding on a regular basis between Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's such a great comfort food that can be served as a main course or as a late snack. I have found a very simple recipe for
corn pudding that I think you will enjoy. To compliment you corn pudding may I suggest a white hot chocolate? A very nice and creamy beverage to keep you warm.
Oh, and don't forget to get those
PUMPKINS! UGRR IN THE DU HOUSE! So let's get to it. Let's check out the Undergroundrailroad for today.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASKING ANITA HILL IF YOU were face-to-face with ANITA HILL what would you ask her? Think about that question for a moment.
The issue of
sexual harassment has sparked much debate in the last decade and now the issue of sexual harassment is back in the form of Arnold Schwarzengger vs. 15 women. This current chapter of what constitutes sexual harassment and a powerful male figure, made me think of Anita Hill and her brave decision to step forward after hearing that her harasser was going to hold a position on the United States Supreme Court. Who could forget that memorable voice during her testimony? When she walked into the hearing room looking so stunning in her turquoise suit, appropriately poised in a leather armchair at the table. As she entered the chambers, I think the world stopped for a second. I remember the panel of all white senators looking at Anita Hill with a stunned expression. Could a black woman in the middle of CHAOS, with
so much at stake, walk into the Senate Confirmation hearings looking
THAT good? What drama! It was a PRICELESS! Just for a fleeting moment I thought, well, why
NOT Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas as a couple? Both attorneys, both attended Yale Law School, both very dynamic African-American role models. I remember during the testimony, Clarence Thomas acknowledged that after Anita Hill had left the EOC, he would take a call "especially if it was Anita".
Since her testimony in 1991, Anita Hill has addressed her own motives for speaking out about the alleged harassment:
"What people can't really understand is that women can come forward on their own," she said. "What I wanted was for everyone listening to understand that these things mattered -- not necessarily for me, but in this particular forum they mattered in terms of whether of not we were getting a person who should sit on the Supreme Court." A lot has happened to Anita Hill since her time in the international media spotlight. Immediately after the hearings she became the subject of intense scrutiny when Congress passed a resolution to investigate the leak of the FBI interview with her about Thomas. Her phone records were subpoenaed and family members were questioned. The stress of the hearings exacerbated some existing health problems and politicians in her native state of Oklahoma called for her resignation from her teaching position at the University of Oklahoma, where she was a professor of law. She also felt the pain of rejection. As she states "I became the messenger who had to be killed."
I personally look upon Anita Hill as a heroine. She has brought a greater awareness to the issues pertaining to sexual harassment and the interpretation of sexual harassment laws. Anita Hill has made it possible for more women to file sexual harassment charges and not feel the reprisal of jeopardizing their career.
Back to my question to Anita Hill. I would ask Anita Hill, "how do you keep your hair looking so perfect? I need a re-do. Give me some hair tips!" Then I would ask just one more teeny question. "Where is that "power" turquoise suit?"

October 5, 2003
NEW YORK - Underneath a gray Manhattan sky, thousands of people turned out yesterday for the reburial of 419 Colonial-era slaves and free blacks just a short distance from the market where some of them were once sold.
"It's a special day, solemn and significant," Jim Huffman, 52, a New York librarian, said as drummers in traditional African kente cloth provided music for the crowd.
The remains had been uncovered in 1991 during construction of a federal office tower in lower Manhattan.
Under pressure from the community, the government abandoned the work and began examining what they found. The site turned out to be a 5-acre burial ground that had been closed in 1794 and long forgotten. It was the final resting place for an estimated 20,000 people of African descent.
The reinterment ceremony yesterday marked the end of a long struggle to have the African Burial Ground recognized.
