"Mother of Pearl" skies treat Norway
PEARLY SKIES: The skies over Oslo resembled the inside of an abalone shell on Monday evening. It was caused by a unique weather phenomenon that roughly translates from its Norwegian name to "Mother of Pearl Skies."

he phenomenon occurs in the winter in the far north, in connection with strong winds over mountainous areas. The "Mother of Pearl Skies" are found at altitudes between 20 and 30 kilometers, where the air is exceedingly dry and cold, generally around minus-80 Celsius.
