My dog won't stop eating poop!

It's so embarrassing when we go to the doggie park and she eats every bit of petrified poo she can find! I can't stop her!

I hope it doesn't make her sick. I don't know - this is the first poo-eating dog I've had!

5. My in-laws have a dog that does this as well

I think she stopped on her own (or at least, they think she did). Very nasty habit! The dog that does it is a pit bull, just over a year old...they have a 14 year old bassett hound...the pit was eating the bassett's poop...EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

7. Seems like most pups love poop

My new one only likes one kind (not including cat poop which all dogs like).. The grayish/white kind. Does anyone know why some dogs poop is so light in color? I wonder what makes it appetizing?

My pup's new obsession is snow. She eats and eats and eats. At least that's better than poop.

2. When I caught HippieDog Hank doing it, I got him his own toothbrush and the cheapest, nastiest toothpaste I could find, and would take him by the snout and literally 'wash his mouth out' as punishment. The taste of the uber minty super cheap toothpaste drove him crazy and he got the message.

If it becomes a problem of your dog eating it's own, there are natural suppliments you can add to their food to make it (even more) distasteful to them. Do a google on 'coprophagia'.

12. The golden retriever I had years ago ate frozen dog poop.

We used to call them "poopcicles". He eventually outgrew the habit, but I agree, it was pretty nasty.

He ate just about anything in those days. He had a real taste for shoes, wood, wicker, record albums, crotches from pants and underwear... NOTHING was safe with Maverick around!

14. It is a natural behavior

This is Angel. How do you suppose she kept her area clean while she nursed her pups? She ate the poop. She continued to do it while her pups pooped in the house. She did more to house train the pups than I did, when she was tired of the poop she taught them to hold it until they were outside.

I have an Eskie too. She used to eat poop as a pup, but grew out of it. But once in a blue moon she will eat or try eat some particularly appetizing poop she finds. Must be something in the pooping dog's diet that is especially appealing. Ugh.

The worst thing she ever did was rub in a pile of fresh soft poop that I think was either wild pig or human (shudder). We were walking in the woods with her off the leash. She had poop from the side of her face to the base of her tail all along the left side of her body. She got a scrubbing she will never forget with detergent and scrub brush. Luckily I had just trimmed her coat short or I'd probably still be scrubbing. You wouldn't believe the stink. She seemed quite proud of herself (before we got back from the walk and she got scrubbed clean).

Both have Eskie facies but with floppy ears. They're a beautiful color, too. How could anyone resist those eyes?

This is PeeDee, she is from a previous litter before I adopted the family. She is built like a beagle but has the long hair from momma.


P.S.- sorry for hijacking the poop thread. Most of these dogs enjoy dining at the litter box buffet catered by my two cats. Kitty & other Kitty.

17. Suggestions

Keep her on leash at the dog park for a while so you can work on this.

Give her a sharp "NO" combined with a leash tug every time she approaches any. Don't confuse her with anything more - it needs to be very clear that this is unacceptable behavior.

At home, keep the yard scrupulously clean so as to avoid temptation.

When she stops approaching the poop on leash for at least a week, let her off leash.

If she goes right back to it, snap on the leash and continue as before.

It's a habit now and habits are hard to break. They require firmness and consistency (which doesn't have to mean harshness) but they can be broken. Don't give up because, though it is a somewhat natural behavior, it's not healthy. Plenty of parasites are found in poop.

It can also mean a diet deficiency and you may want to ask your vet for a recommendation on feeding or supplementing.

19. We have that problem too with our dog

Weadopted him from the Human Society when he just turned 8. We've had him for 3 years and have tried to discourage it, but he still goes for it.
We thought that must mean that his previous owners beat him or something if they found poop in the house. He is a very smart dog so we figured that if that happened, he would eat it. That isn't the only reason that we think that, he is deathly afraid of brooms and mops too.
Glad to hear that other dogs have that problem too.
