It needn't be American, and you can like it for any reason at all--- music, lyrics, etc. . I'll go first: I like 'De Colores'.

What's yours?

:)

7. G.I. Joe
"He'll fight for freedom wherever there's trouble. G. I. Joe is there!

G. I. Joe! (a real American hero) G. I. Joe is there!

It's G. I. Joe against Cobra the enemy, fighting to save the day.

He never gives up; he's always there, fighting for freedom over land and air!
G. I. Joe! (a real American hero) G. I. Joe is there!

He never gives up; he'll stay 'til the fight's won. G. I. Joe will dare.

G. I. Joe! (a real American hero) G. I. Joe!"

YO JOE!

(Seriously, I'll sign any petition to have that become the national anthem).

9. 'The Internationale'
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:19 PM by Sporadicus
Alright, so it's not patriotic in a jingoistic, nationalistic way, but it represents a struggle of ALL humanity in overturning tyranny and oppression. I especially like these modern lyrics by Billy Bragg:

Stand up, all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might
Don't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all.

CHORUS:
So come brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries on
The Internationale
Unites the world in song
So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
The international ideal
Unites the human race

Let no one build walls to divide us
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
We'll live together or we'll die alone
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken, now they must give
And end the vanity of nations
We've one but one Earth on which to live

And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields
We stand unbowed before their armour
We defy their guns and shields
When we fight, provoked by their aggression
Let us be inspired by life and love
For though they offer us concessions
Change will not come from above.

On edit: it's not just for commies, ya know!

back on the 70's when i was following the Dead for a year, i would start singing it while driving down the road with a van stuffed full of fellow hairy hippies. we would all sing along.

i can only imagine what normal folk thought as they saw our beat up van with a painted peace sign and heard us singing it at the top of our lungs.

it really is a beautiful song. and i agree, ray charles does do the best version of it.

it should be our national anthem.

Remember the song was origionally "God Blessed America for me" Sort of an answer to "God Bless America". So this land was made for you and me replaces the god blessed america for me at the end of the verses

-This verse is heard now and then:

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing --

-I have never heard this one, and only read it on a copy of the manuscript:

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people --
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if

33. Chester our first anthem,,,,,,,,,catchy tune
Chester / Lyrics

Let tyrants shake their iron rod,

And slavery clank her galling chains.

We fear them not; we trust in God;

New England’s God forever reigns.

When God inspired us for the fight

Their ranks were broke, their lines were forced;

Their ships were shattered in our sight

Or swiftly driven from our coast.

The foe comes on with haughty stride;

Our troops advance with martial noise.

Their veterans flee before our youth,

And generals yield to beardless boys.

What grateful offerings shall we bring?

What shall we render to the Lord?

Loud Hallelujah let us sing.

And praise his name on every chord.

42. "The Power And The Glory" by Phil Ochs
The Power And The Glory- Phil Ochs

Come and take a walk with me thru this green and growing land
Walk thru the meadows and the mountains and the sand
Walk thru the valleys and the rivers and the plains
Walk thru the sun and walk thru the rain

Here is a land full of power and glory
Beauty that words cannot recall
Oh her power shall rest on the strength of her freedom
Her glory shall rest on us all (on us all)

From Colorado, Kansas, and the Carolinas too
Virginia and Alaska, from the old to the new
Texas and Ohio and the California shore
Tell me, who could ask for more?

Yet she's only as rich as the poorest of her poor
Only as free as the padlocked prison door
Only as strong as our love for this land
Only as tall as we stand

But our land is still troubled by men who have to hate
They twist away our freedom & they twist away our fate
Fear is their weapon and treason is their cry
We can stop them if we try

61. All of them (the English/British ones that is).
God save the Queen,
Jerusalem,
Land of Hope and Glory,
Rule, Britannia.

I like the style that these things are in, I found myself tempted to join in 'Men of Harlech' at the rugby yesterday (England - Wales) even though it's all about fighting us. Speaking of which, not technically a patriotic song, but the English rugby fans sing 'Swing low sweet chariot' for some odd reason, which is great.

La Marseillaise - especially when played by a French military band (nobody else can play it in quite the same way).

Fratelli d'Italia,

The great epic national anthems of the S. American countries.
