Bragging Rights: My son's JROTC unit are National Drill Team Champs

They are in Montgomery, AL for the American Legion/Coca-Cola High School Drill Team National Championships.

He called me earlier this evening to say that they had placed in every event they had participated, but that another team had edged them out of the overall National Championship trophy.

Then he called about an hour later. Seems as they were on their way to load the buses for the trip back to the hotel, the head judge came over and told them they found an error in the scores and that they had actually won.

They took first overall in both armed and unarmed divisions (competing in regulation, inspection, exhibition, and color guard events in each division) and placed in facsimile division. They were Best in Service: Navy.

I had so wanted to go on this trip to watch them compete (among 90 schools in total), but I have been so sick w/ the flu that I couldn't go.

They will be arriving back at the school tomorrow, right around kick-off time. We've got a lot of organizing to do to get a welcome home party planned for the champs.

I'm so proud. Not just of my son, but of the whole team. (They all call me Momma!)

4. I'm feeling better

My fever broke on Friday, but they had left on Wednesday.

No feast, but plenty of balloons, and noise makers.

We want to let the kids and their families get home to watch the Patriots win.... after all, every time these kids bring home a national championship, so do the Pats!

...as a former Drill Team commander (many, many, many years ago...) I can appreciate how much hard work and practice goes in to making a good team, let alone National Champions...!!! A heartfelt congratulations to your son and his team mates for a job well done.. :hi:

my junior year of high school (four years ago). Loved it. It was a major factor in my decision to join the military.

7. My son is a color guard captain and commander

And when he carries the American Flag and commands a routine, it nearly always brings a tear to my eye.

That stuff is way harder than it looks.

(Actually he's not my biological son, but he lives w/ us (since the end of December) and I love him like a son, so he's my son.)

But his grades were not so good so the Drill team coach wouldn't take him.

My nephew participated in drill while in JROTC (in Enterprise, AL by the way) so I can appreciate how much work and commitment went into their achievement. Well done!
