3. Carnival
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 11:34 AM by Feathered Fish
is the period of celebration before Lent, climaxing on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). The idea of lent is penitence and reflection so people, for hundreds of years, have partied very hard in the weeks leading up to it.
Three themes of Carnival are food, sex and violence, although violence has tamed since renaissance times. Lots of meat eating - The word carnival means (and correct me if I'm wrong) farewell to meat. Catholics used to abstain from eating meat in the period of Lent.
This is a painting by Bruegel in the 16th century depicting the differences of Carnival and Lent.

(btw - I'm a renaissance freak)
