but I still want to thank you for your service in the health care industry. You people who work directly with patients are the BEST people on earth! I hate hospitals and going to the doctor, but I have never met a health care professional who was not patient, kind and extremely giving of time and care! :yourock:

12. NC_Nurse..Is there anything Democrats can do to support nursing

in general? Seems profits are trying to squeeze nurses out and semi professionals in? I am surprised I have not seen more about the nursing profession being talked about here on a Democratic forum? I may be wrong and everything is hunky dory, but I think otherwise. Why is there not more ourcry as in the teachers union etc? :shrug:

I just know, I love people who work with patients directly, since I was a patient not long ago and the nurses were so wonderful, I am sure I saw halo's on their heads...could have been the drugs? but I think it may be my belief, cause they were so very kind and giving. :hi:

13. NO, all is not hunky-dory

The last time I heard a statistic about it, 1 in 5 nurses planned to leave the profession in the next 5 years. Too little money, too much responsibility.
When the first wave of the nursing shortage hit in the 80's, the move to replace us with aides and LPN's was popular, but too many problems arose (read: mistakes and lawsuits) and they realized they needed RN's for a lot of those jobs. There is still a huge shortage, which will only worsen since most nurses are older than me and I ain't no spring chicken (44 in March). Younger women have found it more lucrative to go into other fields and there aren't a lot of men in the field yet. Since it's a traditionally female profession, it's paid WAY too little and not given the respect it deserves.
Unfortunately, it's just part of the huge overhaul that our healthcare system needs. But I'm glad every time I hear someone like you recognize the huge contribution that nurses make.

I am truly AMAZED as a Democrat I have not heard that slogan..as a patient I am doubly disheartened....maybe it should be pasted in every hospital room?
