Damn; Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper
Forgot how good they were, but I threw on Get Out Of My Way a little while ago on a whim, and the brilliance is coming back to me.

Any "Where Are They Now?" updates on what Mojo and Skid are up to these days? By all rights, they shoulda been superstars.

2. Oh, they put on a PHENOMENAL show
I remember seeing them play "Mushroom Maniac," with Mojo banging away on a water-cooler jug.

Just incredible lyrics, overall; unfortunately for the nation, they are more relevant than ever.

"I don't wanna pee-pee in no cup/unless Nancy Reagan's gonna drink it up..."

3. I had completely
forgotten about them! Saw them live @ the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1988. Fantastic! Sooo funny. I believe I still have their albums around somewhere. Too bad my turntable has bitten the dust.

"Where the hell's my money" was one of my favs.

4. Mojo made an album a little bit ago with Jello Biafra and...
He released an album in 2002 called "Whereabouts Unknown"

But, the all time best, was his effort with a unknown band called "The Pleasure Barons" and their best (they only made one I think) was called "Live in Las Vegas" featuring such great songs as "Debbie Gibson is Pregnant" and "Elvis is Everywhere"

The Pleasure Barons were comprised of Mojo Nixon, Dave Alvin and the late great "Country Dick" Montana.

Bonus points, if you can tell me who Country Dick was (without visiting another site) if you can, my hats off to you!

If you can, and your female, I'm in love already.

5. Country Dick
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 07:37 PM by Canadian Socialist
was front singer... for... on the tip of my tongue. Old age has robbed me of the name of the group. eeek. However, true, and funny story. Saw the Country Dick group at the University quite a few years ago. This asshole I was with (also can't remember his name) kept heckling. Finally, CD stopped the music, leaned over, and said, "I've fucked bigger men then you." Then went right back to playing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of their songs "Happy Boy"?

edit to add: Love love love "I'm living with a three-foot anti-christ"

8. You are all over it....

My little dog spot got hit by a car
Hubba-Hubba-Hubba
Put his guts in a box and I stuck him in a drawer
Hubba-Hubba-Hubba

I'm a happy boy (happy boy!) I'm a happy boy (happy boy!)
Oh ain't it good when things are going your way, hey-hey!

(Kazoos!)

I forgot all about it for a month and a half
Hubba-Hubba-Hubba
I opened the drawer and I started to laugh
Hubba-Hubba-Hubba

I'm a happy boy (happy boy!) I'm a happy boy (happy boy!)
Oh ain't it good when things are going your way, hey-hey!

9. You two have it going on....
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 07:55 PM by givemebackmycountry
I saw the Beat Farmers 5 times.

It's been awhile back but I caught them at this dive in KC and I remember CD came outside to smoke and get some air. I happened to be doing the same thing.

So, I asked him when the Farmers were going to release a new album.

He just kinda bowed his head with that big ass Cowboy hat on and he sort of growled..."Well we got some legal issues" and the he muttered something about the "dirtbag record label"

When they signed with Curb Records it was over for them.

He was a legend, and the Farmers could just flat out ROCK when they wanted to.

"Are you drinking with me Jesus?"

edited due to conspicuous consumption

That's so cute! Too bad I'm probably old enough to be your mother  And yes, I miss hockey so much it hurts. My Flames! Wither art thou, my Flames! Thank goodness we have an excellent junior team (the Hitmen). And lacrosse is really catching on. Sorta like hockey without the ice.

And I'll turn 50 in April, so if you are old enough to be MY mom then the cold air in Calgary must do something good for you two legged cuddle-ups.

And Gary Bettman should be publicly flogged.

I miss my Av's.

21. Wow! Are you ever old!
Just kidding. I'll be 50 in November. Right now, though, I FEEL 73. Fell on the ice outside my house. Cracked my knees pretty badly. But enough about me. Curse you Gary Bettman! (shakes fist at sky). And Bob Goodanow <sp?>.

BTW, the Flames were robbed, robbed I tell you, last season.

15. moved to Atlanta, believe it or not
after being relieved of my position under evil wheelchair-bound pornographer Hairy Mint in May 04, and experiencing a glorious unemployed summer in SoCal courtesy of the State of California, I realized I hadda finda job, and ended up in the ATL. (Hey, publishing's a tough gig, what can I say?)

So how have YOU been, NSMA?

23. oh yeah, for six years
weird mix of balancing the redneck readership with the progressive readership. Weird, weird politics at play there. Though I was there for the impeachment fiasco and Larry's successful attempt to thwart it, which pretty much makes that portion of my life worthwhile.

Bob Livingstone: "I've been Flynted!" LOL! Damn right, you were!

25. naw; ultimately it's way-OK
MY boss had been canned a year and a half before I was, and from there it had become increasingly hell, with mass firings, etc.

Besides, I had been cornered into the adult-entertainment ghetto, and needed to get out of it at some point. Now I'm running an above-ground mag...

I do miss SoCal though, especially the female contingent. So far the Southern belles have been giving me the cold shoulder.

17. Mojo retired from touring last year...
I believe he's now a DJ at radio station out west and hosts "Outlaw Country" on Sirius...

http://www.mojonixon.com/

Mojo was SO hot and cold, but you can make yourself a helluva good mix tape by cherrypicking his albums.

"I Hate Banks" is one I find myself singing all the time, and "The Amazing Bigfoot Diet" is pretty, well, amazing too.

I got nothing much to add, but there was a period when I was convinced Mojo Nixon was a holy madman for our time. Heck, I'm still not sure he wasn't. I'm sorry he faded back into the woodwork.

26. I love Mojo
"Root Hog or Die" was a great finale for his collaboration with Skid, and I enjoyed the Toadliquors too.

I used to close my shifts as a college jock with "Burn Down The Malls".

His tribute to Country Dick was lifted from Woody Guthrie's "Jesus Christ". :D

29. Last time I checked, Mojo had an afternoon drivetime radio show -
San Diego, 101.5 KGB (at least as of two months ago). He's living in Coronado with family and doing local gigs and short tours to keep the roof over his head and his kids in school.

He's crazy as a loon (the Loon in the Afternoon) and very non-conservitive. For a while there, I was wondering whether or not Clear Channel would drop him, due to some of the things he said. But then, Clear Channel picked up Air America in this market, so I'm thinking the local honchos are at least moderate leaning.
