Join a bird club. Too late for the Christmas bird count but get involved in some other real nerd oriented aspect of the hobby. Not to be sexist, but women band hummingbirds and feed mealworms to bluebirds, guys are out chasing rarities. Follow your state's rare bird hot line and start working on your "list." You'll start encountering some familiar faces over and over again, ha ha.

If you have expensive optics/photography equipment to lug around, so much the better. I say you can't go wrong with Swarovski.
