Alicia Keys: No-talent hack
RANT MODE ON!

Okay, I realize that this is way harsh, seeing as how we're supposed to be feeling all warm and fuzzy after the overwhelmingly Patriotic and American (tm) Super Bowl pre-show. (I was wondering if there was about to be some kind of fistfight between the Black Eyed Peas and Charlie Daniels, but this just proves that I am a diehard cynic.)

Alicia Keys isn't worthy to carry a copy of one of Ray Charles' CD's to the stage, let alone perform a song that he made his own. I would have much rather seen a videotape of Ray Charles performing "America The Beautiful" (or listened to the aforementioned CD while the students from his former school signed and sang along,) than be aurally assaulted yet again by Ms. Keys and her lack of talent.

It was horrifying.

RANT MODE OFF!

Back to your regularly scheduled Super Bowl bacchanal,
Julie

1. Charlie Daniels was there? Ugh...that just shows how bad it's gotten
That they have to have a washed up hack who hasn't had a hit song in close to 3 decades, simply because I would imagine they felt some idiotic need to have a performer of his political stripe.

This is all speculation on my part of course but I'm in just an ornery enough mood to not care.

3. Gotta have Charlie Daniels on
as an antidote to those uppity liberals and people of other races.

What a poor excuse for "talent".

5. Are you serious?
Alicia Keyes is one of the few talented people I've seen come out of the music industry in the past few years.

7. Not flaming ... but
what exactly do you consider " talent " ? Its alright that you might not like her but at least the girl can actually " read music " - I know that does not make her a messiah of the music recording industry but its refreshing in this day in age of MTV Barbies that there is actually someone , a female at that , who is being " themselves " and has complete artistic control over their own music - and who is not being strung along by their record company ; compared to the modern saviors of the media Ashley Simpson ( please , please never ever let her make another recording . )

10. No kidding
I doubt anyone who has seen Ms. Keys live in concert can call her a hack. She is a good singer and piano player, and definitely knows music judging from the way she came up with new arrangements for her songs when she played in concert. Her record label and management overhyped her in the beginning, but that doesn't take away from her abilities.

12. I agree with , she was overhyped in the beginning ...
but now , I think she is at a level where she does not need any " overhype " , her music speaks for itself .

9. Got to disagree with you, I think she is very talented and did
quite well. I loved it when she said "Lord knows we need it" at the point of the song "God shed his grace on thee".

She is probably one of the few artists out there today that has actual talent. (imho)

11. JulieRB..I'll have to agree with you.
People (who know me, on this forum) Know I'm a harsh critic.
There's certainly nothing wrong with liking her but for myself, I
don't like to hear singers that don't hit notes on Key. Being Blessed/Cursed with perfect pitch, I just find such singing... irritating.

13. I have the same problem
>People (who know me, on this forum) Know I'm a harsh critic.<

I just don't dig Alicia Keys. I think Norah Jones is immensely more talented, but that's my opinion. I was just as pissed when Celine Dion decided to cover Etta James' incomparable "At Last". Am I the only person in the world that wishes those of lesser talents would leave deathless renditions of standards alone?

>Being Blessed/Cursed with perfect pitch, I just find such singing... irritating.<

I agree as well. I have the same blessing/curse. Karaoke, for instance, is painful. The rest of our friends think it's the greatest.

16. Ah..You understand the difference between saying...
I really like <Singer>.

I think <Singer> has tremendous talent.

I truly like the old Fats Domino stuff like "Be my guest tonight"
but if somebody said Fats has got a sensational voice, I'd have to say "Wellllllllll" :)

14. Not quite a "hack"
I appreciate the fact she plays her own music,

but I think a lot of times she is hitting the wrong notes, and that's a BIG pet peeve of mine, especially when you're singing with a piano right next to you.

There's no excuse for being off on pitch/key when you're playing the same thing on piano.

17. I'm not moved by her ....
She's beautiful, an OK singer and she plays a decent piano. I know that she raised the talent bar when you compare her with the other young "talent" that these big corporate record companies are spewing out these days but I don't think she's extrodinary. When you think 20+ years ago, it was standard practice for an artist to have AT THE VERY LEAST her level of talent. Today anyone can be an "artist".
