Prokudin-Gorskii was the Czar's photographer, and used a three-camera system with colored filters to record the Empire for the Czar.

2. Absolutely stunning

I saw this site a couple years ago when it was mentioned on Slashdot. It's like looking into another world. We have become so accustomed to thinking of the past as dark, grey and faded thanks to all the old news photographs and newsreels. These unique photographs help us to remember that these were real people.

3. These are from an earlier post

They were made using the Autochrome process developed by the Lumiere brothers in 1903. They were shot during WWI.

5. This Completely Disproves the Theory That

the world was black and white before the 1950s, and only became colored since then.

(That was from Calvin and Hobbes, I believe.) :silly:

I love the early 19th century, and it's amazing to see it in color. The first early color photo I saw was a portrait of Tolstoy, and I couldn't believe it.

Do you know a lot about Russian history? My great grandfather was supposedly the Czar's Veterinarian so I'd be interested in any other sites you might know of that have detailed information regarding the people surrounding the Czar.

Now I need to go pass that site along to my mother. Thanks!
