What wildlife do you see regularly in your yard?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 04:18 PM by Bonhomme Richard
I'm not talking about the usual birds, cats or dogs but those less frequently seen visitors.
For me
Deer, turkeys (lots), fox, racoons, possums, woodchucks, chipmonks (I'm streching it here), vultures, red tail hawk and I hear the coyotes all the time but haven't seen any except one stung up by it's hind legs hanging from the rafter of a barn down the road.
Edit: squirrels, rabbits , bats

Ok, so I like squirrels. We have a lot black and grey squirrels around here. Though I prefer the brown squirrels. Used to have a ton of chipmonks before we moved here.

Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 07:35 PM by pbartch
Actually, it's a floating home. We see LOTS of ducks (duck sex is nasty.....just awful in fact) beaver (including the HUGE ones....they are called King Beaver) Canadian Geese, Greebies, and then there are the fish. Sturgeon, salmons and sqaw fish (get paid to catch it because this fish endangers the baby salmon!)

We catch CRAYFISH (crawdads) and have wonderful fun crawdad parties in the summer. They are HUGE - and taste just delicious dipped in butter!!

8. bats
9. opossums

There's lotsmore, cuz I live in the country, but I limited myself to just our yard and not the surrounding land. There are 3 dogs in our yard, which tends to limit what comes inside the fence. But it is amazing how many animals will sneak in on them!

22. I forgot, we have owls and rabbits, too...I envy you the turkeys...
...we have had too many people move out here from the city now, and they are carving things up so badly that seeing turkeys would be a real treat. Our quail population is almost gone now, too, which sucks cuz I used to love hearing them sing in the mornings. Sigh.

Now, we hear coyotes, see red fox, see squirrels, raccoons, mink and all kinds of other critters when we are out on our 25 acres. We have 5 ponds stocked with largemouth bass, bream (bluegill) and catfish, too. But those are outside my yard proper.

14. Rats, Mourning Doves, Pigeons
One NYC stereotype that holds true is the rats. There is plenty for them to eat and they look well fed.

We had coyote, gators, opossum, parrots and raccoons in Central Park but they powers that be decided the raccoons were getting too tame and scaring the city folk so they relocated them. Some caymans were pulled from the Meer too.

And last year we had that guy who kept a tiger in his apartment. My landlord is not quite that lenient.

I've seen a few foxes over on the Main Line, usually late at night, and in my headlights, scaring me witless by running in front of the car.

On a less attractive note, we get a LOT of turkey vultures as well. Not the beauty queens of the animal kingdom.

21. What runs faster: groundhog or cat? Surprise = groundhog
It's a riot to watch our (belled) cat chase things. The only things she catches are inside mice, and that's because they're handicapped by being trapped in the house.

I live in an apartment on a converted horsefarm, and we love sitting out on summer nights, watching the creatures walk (or in the skunks' case, waddle) down the flagstone walkways (if there's a choice between yard and walkways, most animals use the walkways).

24. The cat is real lucky the groundhog is not cornered...
...because a hog that has to fight can rip up a cat in pretty short order. I have seen them eviscerate dogs.

Groundhogs will run if they have the option, but you don't want to face those teeth and claws if they are corners.

That's the main reason for the bell - gives the critters a warning . She tries to move without it making any noise, but that only happens if she moves very slowly.

27. Lots of Deer Near the DC Beltway in Maryland
They've become a real hazard in Montgomery County.

There are some neat birds in the area around College Park, where I live. On two occasions, I was jogging and saw a pileated woodpecker. The little streams often have cattle egrets and great blue heron. I once saw a green heron, which is more unusual, and a snowy egret (black legs, yellow feet) flying over I-95 and the beltway. And once, I swear there was a painted bunting out the back window. It's only supposed to live in the Southwest, but the markings are very colorful and unmistakeable.

Some of these are not in my yard, but they were close by in other people's yards.

39. As I was sitting on the back porch one evening
smoking (I know, my bad) in the dark, I see what looks like a cat coming towards me, so I just kept sitting there. It walked up to within a couple of feet of me and I realized that it was too big to be a cat. Fearing a skunk, I flipped on the lights. Lo and behold, a gray fox! Wasn't afraid of me either. He just moved on...

We have deer, road runners, chicken hawks, hawks and the usual buzzards, but what really gets me are the scorpions. Yikes, they come into the house too!

40. Wildlife I have seen in my "backyard" .....
there is so much wildlife in the Piney woods of East Texas ... my favorite has to be a black panther, who comes and goes every Spring and Fall. I understand she has 100 mile radius that she trots around in, and so far, no one has shot her and she doesn't seem disturb the 'domestic animals'. But I usually see a list of animals and feed occasionally;
1. deer
2. flying squirrels
3. Fox
4. skunks
5. snakes (mostly copperhead and water moccasin)
6. tons of birds - Great Horned Owls, red tails, Bald Eagle, woodpeckers, juncos, Phebe's, cardinals, bluebirds, indigo buntings, martins, goldfinches, pilated woodpeckers, etc
7. skinks, mice, etc
8. bats
9. opossums
10. Bobcat
11. once - a black bear
12. coyote
12. stray dogs and cats
13. green parrots
14. Beaver
15. very few squirrel, something killed them off, but once a black squirrel.
16. rabbit

There might be more but these animals that I have seen with my own two eyes.

56. Squirrels, rabbits, bats and
occasionally raccoons. Hawks, owls, turkey buzzards, blue herons, canada geese, and eagles also buzz around but rarely land. I did stop feeding the birds cause the darn hawks kept swiping my bird friends from the feeders and then eating them in front of my window seat.

Occasionally there are deer or fox in the cornfield/beanfields down the road.

The tree line along the side of the house was cut down last year, so I don't hear the owls much anymore.
