1. Desktop for sure.
More customizable, easier to upgrade a little bit, and a LOT easier to fix if something breaks.

14. How long does it take to get used to the little built in mousie thing?
This is my problem with laptops and I wonder if you just get used to it over time.

15. If it's the little button you wiggle, I don't know. I hate those things.
If it's the touch pad, it doesn't take much time, at least for me. I love the one on my current laptop. It has a strip alongside of it for scrolling.

33. Mrs Grumpy, you can get a converter
for a few bucks and change to port to mouse usage; that's what I have - a laptop with a mouse

But the erasor-thingy is easy to use as well... you do get used to it.

3. What is it to be used for?
You gonna me doing major number crunching or playing top-of-the-line games?

Get a desktop.

You gonna be travelling around, surfing the web at Starbucks, writing down random thoughts as and when they occur?

Get a laptop.

If you're going to let me choose for you, then I demand that you bring it over to me and drop it off, because it will suit MY needs, not yours.

:)

4. It really depends on what you are going to use it for
Laptops can be incredibly useful. But if you need a seriously powered desktop for games or downloading things then you gotta go with the desktop.

I use both. Couldn't live without either one.

8. That's funny - I have a desktop
And I yearn for the days of my old laptop (and that one wasn't even all that portable... 12 lb monster).

The next computer I'm buying will no-doubt be a 15 inch Powerbook... *drool*

29. I would like to have both
I have a 17 inch Toshiba Sattelite. It's not that I don't like it. I just find for writing for long periods of time, which I think the OP is talking about, a laptop isn't as ergonomically comfortable as a desktop. My neck gets stiff and upper back. So if I had both, I would be happy, but since I only have one, I prefer the desktop.

9. I would say go with a desktop as primary
And if you can manage it get a Laptop as well. It sounds excessive. But its a fantastic combination.

We use our laptop as an adjunct to our entertainment center. We play anime and videos we DL on the big screen through the laptop which uses the wireless network in house to bring the files over from the main system. Its very cool.

I am getting a G5 desktop imac soon but for what I do (some webdesign, writing, internet, photoshop etc...) my ibook has been perfect!

17. are you going to take it anywhere
laptops tend to use the older technology (by a few months) because it had to be made smaller and cooled correctly. I say if you aren't going to take it anywhere get a desktop, easier to fix and upgrade too. I know laptops are cool and everything but you have to be practical too.

20. andy 's right, unless you will travel with it, it's not worth it.
i loved my ice book (mac) but the ports got messed up and they are attached to the motherboard and i'd have to replace the whole insides to get internet working again.
it's not worth the extra $$ unless you really are taking it on the road.

18. Get a rugged laptop
I have used a Panasonic Toughbook in the past and just loved it. I also once used some law-enforcement-level ruggedized laptop (can't recall the brand name right now) which was even better.

Why would you need anything else. Besides, desktops are ugly and take up a lot of real estate.

portable if necessary, space saving even if you never take it off your desk. And anything you don't like about your laptop (such as it's mouse) you can just attach a different version

repairs and upgrades are expensive. and make sure you get the best possible warranty to cover the lcd screen.

31. I'm ditching my desktop for a laptop. Go Lappy!
I have a SMALL house and a desk for a computer takes up what feels like 1/4 of the living room. I've decided to go laptop with a nice comfy chair instead of a desk.

34. Depends on how much money you have.
Desktops are more powerful...are easy to upgrade and easy to fix plus about half the price.
Laptops are convenient but not easily upgradeable, very hard and expensive to fix.

I own both and when my Laptop motherboard went out it was about 350 dollars to fix (and I'm a computer tech!)
A desktop motherboard is about 1/3 the price.

My opinion...buy a desktop now and a Toshiba later....

PS: Stay away from Sony. They've had a lot of trouble with their motherboards.... And for GOD SAKES..don't buy a HP ...take it from a Tech..they are built with shit parts.(how come you think they are always a little less expensive than other brands?) :)
