I just watched 'The Pianist', for the first time.

What an amazing film. Just... wow.

I spent the first half crying, and the second half just in awe.

22. Oh he will....next up is King Kong.
Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings fame) is directing it. Frankly I'm a bit concerned, but I am hoping it's good.

Actually before that he's got The Jacket, which I've heard is kind of a sci-fi-ish artsy thrillery thing with Keira Knightley.

He's going to be a big star, and then he's going to marry me.

:loveya:

25. D'oh! You weren't supposed to see that!
I'm waiting for Nicholas Nickelby and Deathwatch to get here from Netflix in order to better gauge my feelings.

:silly:

Maybe Jamie can just be my...dance instructor, until the wedding. ;)

Thought I'd sneak that in under the radar....:)

I'll let you know how it is, I'll probably watch that first. Andy Serkis is in that too, actually. Thought that was interesting...

23. Adrien's performance is breathtaking.
All cheesy worship of him aside, I'd see the film for no other reason besides his performance. He is just about every scene (maybe every one?), many of them alone...his Oscar win was definitely deserved.

Roman Polanski did some good work there as well (enough to win the Oscar, which I think he did? I don't know).

15. No, you can NOT have Adrien Brody.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:12 PM by tjdee
That's all I have to say about that.

The thing that frustrated me about that film was a)it was pretty much "Hey, look how horrific the Nazis were", AGAIN, and b)Szpilman was too "everyman" for me. It was kind of like he floated from situation to situation.

However, a)it was a real story, which makes it terribly sad, b)Polanski's life was eerily similar to Szpilman's, and c)Adrien kicked everyone's ass with his performance. It was a very, very good performance. He has a natural style I really like.

OH, and DUer LiberalTexan (not around much anymore?) is related to the German soldier who helped Szpilman.

21. Definitely, you should buy it.
It's downstairs, and I don't really remember, LOL, but the dvd has a kind of "making of" the film which adds a lot.

The extras aren't too plentiful (in fact I think that featurette is it) but it's certainly a film one could watch over and over again.

For more reasons than being charmed by Mr. Brody, even. When he said he loves a woman who plays the cello, you know he ain't talkin' bout the music .

One memorable part for me was when he was "playing" the piano--Adrien said it was like he was pretending that the piano was like a lover he couldn't be with, a comparison which I thought was stirring.

28. Well, it's much more personal.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:45 PM by tjdee
It's like watching your friend lose everything.

I'd say yes, it's more powerful, because you have Polanski directing. He was a small boy who escaped the camps in Poland, at the same time Szpilman was--just in another city. So he knows WTF he's talking about, what it was really like, etc.

The film happens in a matter of fact way, too, so he holds no punches.

And then as I mention above, Adrien is such a strong actor and can convey a lot with little dialogue.

I haven't seen Schindler's List in a while, though.

31. Thanks, yeah I love movies that are real testimonies from people
who lived through it. I have read a lot about the holocaust, and yes it is very, very sad. Some of the books just took my breath away. I'm am one who will never forget the past, and love to read about it, so that never happens again.

32. The film is based on a book/memoirs, actually.
I always screw up his first name, but Mr. Szpilman's book is what prompted Polanski to make the film. I think he'd always wanted to do a film about his childhood (that part) and never found the right material until he read Szpilman's book.

30. I just saw it recently, too (mild spoiler)
Extraordinary film. Some parts were pretty hard to take.

The piece he played in the ruined house was an abridged Ballade #1 of Chopin. That really affected me, as Mrs. Ironflange used to play the same piece, many years ago.

33. hey rev.. I watched a few days ago too
pretty amazing, eh?

I could feel my guts twisting inside out.

I'm sure the film quite close to Polanski, since I believe his mother was a casualty of the Warsaw Ghetto. He managed to escape.

It is not sure its his absloute best film, but its personal tone is quite affecting.
