Any Sam Phillips fans out there?

I just added Martinis and Bikinis to my iPod -- I had temporarily forgotten how much I love love love that album.

I love her hopeful cynicism, you know?

...I Need Love

i need love
not some sentimental prison
i need god

3. This Sam Phillips is married to T Bone Burnett
...he of O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack fame.

She's an immensely talented singer-songwriter.

Fans of the Gilmore Girls might recognize her - she provides all the background music for the show.

although Martinis and Bikinis is great. She lost me however on the next one...what was it called? I haven't heard much from her since.

Her cover of Gimme Me Some Truth is amazing.

Progmom- we definitely have some of the same taste in music!

7. Ominipop (It's Only A Flesh Wound Lambchop)
That was the follow-up. She lost a lot of people on that one, then she kind of disappeared.

She showed back up in 2001 with a beautiful acoustic record called Fan Dance. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's fantastic. Her second acoustic record came out last year - A Boot & A Shoe. It's an amazingly beautiful and sad album that pretty much chronicles the breakup of her marriage...produced by her soon-to-be ex-husband.

sample lyric:

Now that I’ve worn out, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon's never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

I rode the pain down
Got off and looked up
Looked into your eyes
The lost open windows
All around
My dark heart lit up the skies

Now that I’ve worn out, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon's never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

Give up the ground
Under your feet
Hold on to nothing for good
Turn and run at the mean times
Chasing you
Stand alone and misunderstood

And now that I’ve worn, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon's never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

16. yeah, I actually figured it out through the lyrics of the latest record
...before I heard the rumors.

fer instance:

I took your ring that never comes off and put it on
Sorry to lose you, sorry to keep you after you were gone
Nothing is small, nothing is unexpected
I want more
When I go this time I don't think I'm coming back

Desire's the element that I can't fight
Dream is the arm of God
Girls looking for themselves in your eyes
I'm looking for you
What's this supposed to be some kind of perfect
I want more
When I go this time I don't think I'm coming back

When I saw her live, she talked about how she has to keep singing the Mister Rogers song: "You'll Never Go Down The Drain" to herself. Sounds like T Bone really hurt her. Jerk.

Happy to see that we like a lot of the same music!!!

20. Gee whiz, my friend picked up on that...
when we went to see her last spring. I hadn't heard anything about her marriage. Then again, I really don't know much about her personal life, which is better left unknown IMHO.

So she doesn't do it for T-Bone anymore?

22. They are no longer together
...though she says they will continue to work together. Their marriage broke up between the release of Fan Dance and A Boot & A Shoe.
They have a daughter together, who I think is around 6 years old.

28. There have been speculations
...that with the immense amount of attention he got from O Brother came a lot of women...and T Bone decided to go for it, leaving Sam in the lurch. Painful.

We can't fix what's broken so let's leave it here and walk on
I'll be right behind you

Love changes everything
I'm not sorry we loved, but I hope I didn't keep you too long

We're not experts
We are believers, ministers of silence
Let no man pull us under doubt
I'll always open my hands to you
I'll be right behind you

29. she's terrific
"the indescribable wow" and "martinis and bikinis" are both excellent albums. the new one is pretty decent too.

back in the 80's she was a christian rock/folk singer that went by the name of leslie phillips. "the turning" is one of the only good examples (IMO) of that genre. she got fed up with the conservative christian movement that mostly listens to that kind of music, changed her name, hooked up with t-bone and starting knocking it out of the park.

30. I really respect her for that
She didn't feel like the Christian pop industry had much to do with God or Christianity, and felt false in what she was doing, so she got herself out of there. She has never matched the sales she had as Leslie, but she believes in what she is doing now.
