This isn't a separation of church and state issue. It's not evangelism. Even if the phrase rubs you the wrong way, look for the intention behind it and respond nicely, or maybe with one of the clever comebacks suggested above.

It also sounds to me like fingernails on the chalkboard, but I'm reminded of the intentions. I was Treasurer for a candidate for Supt. of Schools last year. A very nice, well educated, highly qualified woman, and a staunch Democrat. We worked together on a daily basis, and she always told me that. I figured, fuck it, she's just being nice.

My grandmother, used to say that phrase all of the time, and she wasn't really even a church-goer! It was just a phrase, it was a nice way of saying have a nice day!

Not everyone has ulterior motives, there are some people out there who are genuinely nice.

Myself, I am agnostic, so the phrase does not bother me, I tend to turn the other cheek and tell folks to have a nice day as well.

I see your point. I don't really like the phrase myself, but I don't let it bother me. I try to understand where the person was coming from and feel it out so to speak. Most of my "blessed day" comments in recent years were made by people whom I believe had good intentions.

Now say the word "fag*ot" or "nig*er" and I will have you screaming on the ground begging for a "blessed day" ! :P

Many black women work as cashiers and I'm frequently told to "Have a blessed day" as I'm given my change. They are religious but they aren't proselytizing-its just part of the culture. I certainly take no offense and wouldn't think of responding rudely. I just smile and thank them.
