I just love it when....
You post a big thread with some questions, and some specific "I don't want to address or debate ___________", and then 80% of the replies ignore your actual question and do just that?

p.s.- I know this is the nature of discussion, etc., that it evolves and develops, and such. I'm just apparently too naive to believe that people might actually read what I wrote, or something ;)

1. Or better, that they miss the point completely
and start arguing something that wasn't even in the context of your statement at all.

2. Yeah, that too...
I mean, it's like trying to bring up abortion in the context of why some people feel they should control someone else's body. You might get some discussion on that, but you'll get a lot more on whether abortion itself is 'right' or 'wrong'. Same idea, different issue. Oh well, I knew it would happen... Guess I deserve it for leaving the Lounge, huh? :)

4. It's becoming almost impossible to have a discussion in GD

7. That's why I don't go there much...
I feel bad, because I feel like I should know more about the depth of issues that are brought up initially in LBN. And then I go into GD, and remember why I don't, because so much of it is like yelling, etc., which I hate. I don't like conflict in general, so I tend to stay away. Can't wait to see what happens with the 'Fetus has different DNA post'....

Is it against the rules to hijack one's own grumpy post? :) :bounce:

8. You weren't very clear
I wasn't sure if your point was "we should let them teach all of those ideas in science as science" or "we should just teach every idea out there as equal and let kids decide..." Or maybe neither. I just wasn't sure what you were saying. That the subject turned the way it did was no surprise. Many of us are very passionate about saving our education system from people with an agenda against science. That is a HUGE subject right now, with ID proponents trying to do an end run around the protections of separation of Church and State, and dismantling science education. It's scary, and there are a lot of strong feelings about that.

9. Thanks Pithlet
I guess my point was that I wasn't trying to make either of those points. I was trying to discuss why parents feel so threatened by ideas outside of what they feel is right, in general (this debate being a specific example). You actually did address that in your reply, so thank you. The fact of whether it qualified as science or not, I guess I hadn't really analyzed enough, and I specifically stated in my post that I wasn't trying to discuss which is correct, as I wasn't very clear on even what ID is about. But I've got it now, or at least a lot more. I can see what you're saying about why it turned the way it did, given that I apparently didn't make my intent clear.

10. It's a subject that always erupts.
You could have been as clear as a sunny day, and it would have turned out the same. :) And, I am a bit more clear about what you were really saying. I think it is that there is so much info out there, and people are very passionate about what they believe, and they want to make sure their children believe the "correct" thing. They feel like if they give an inch, the "other side" will take over completely.

15. Thanks!
That's my younger son on Christmas morning.

Having kids is a blast! It's hard work, but so worth it. Even when they throw your makeup into the toilet. That cute little subject of my sig line did that yesterday.

11. I hear ya! Sometimes it helps if you stay
really specific. For example the top 90% of your post was about the topic you didn't want to debate and the last sentence was what you really wanted to talk about. Instead post what you had in your last sentence *first* and add your supporting comments so it directs attention.

I've had to learn that the hard way.

13. That makes sense...
I guess I have too much faith that people will read the whole thing, and belief that background is good for understanding where a question is coming from ... I'll join you in learning that the hard way, apparently. :)
