3. US HWY 41....3 miles south of Oshkosh
in a Chevy pick-up truck......

when I saw the headlights of the traffic that ws BEHIND me, I knew I was in trouble....I knew if I hit the brakes I'd spin and waited until I saw the media strip coming up and ten spun it into the grass/snow.....how the traffic missed me, I'll never know....

Just be happy you're still alive!!! (I'm glad you're still alive)

5. I Only Did One 360
On the overpass in New Haven CT where I-95 meets I-91. At night. At 60MPH. Ended up only breaking a headlight on the guard rail.

You have experienced something truly frightening and been given new life. You are god for a day.

7. Yep. On I-77, 17 years ago
When I was a very young and dumb 19yr old. I stopped after spinning about 6 times to catch my breath and stop shaking. The truck behind me stopped to make sure I was ok. The Camaro carrying a couple and their infant hit the same patch I did and slammed into the stopped truck. This kept them from going over the dropoff down at least 100 feet.

9. only made it to 180
ended up facing the wrong way up against the snow covered concrete median. Having semi's slide directly at me was no fun. Being the 33rd accident that morning in a mile stretch, I didn't get cited. They finally shut that section of expressway down.

Glad you are ok ZombyWoof. Are you out of the shock stage yet?

10. Oh, yes
I skidded on ice a few years ago. Luckily, I was able to stop without hitting anything because there were other cars on the road. But the guy in the pickup truck behind me was not so lucky. He skidded and rear-ended me. I wasn't hurt, but the car sure was a mess.

11. Obligatory retelling of my funny black ice story:
...So I'm in Telluride, Colorado, "in town" after a night of drinking. I'm taking the drunk shuttle back up to the village, it's about 2 a.m.

In the van besides me are a bunch of Texans. Driver from Australia. Going about 10-15 mph, so one of the TX folks asks him why he's going so slowly.

"Well," said the Aussie, "You've got to watch out for black ice on the road."

Long pause. Texan looks at him, then says "Son, I've been in Telluride for six, seven days, and I haven't seen any black guys on the road, or anywhere else for that matter." :D

47. Okay, that was funny!
Although black ice isn't.

I hit some on a lonely (thank God) stretch of 309 just south of Doylestown, PA. Did several 360s, and ended up on the grass beside the road.

Made a stop at the first liquor store, and my eyes must have been the size of saucers because they were sure looking at me funny!

59. If you turn the wheel slightly one way or the other, perfect powerslide...
We used to do them in empty parking lots in Missouri..

Fun as shit, until one day I was going a little too fast, hit the curb at the other end of the lot sideways, and sheered the rack and pinion completly from the unibody on a 84' Ford Escort....

It was a POS anyway.. :)

13. Thanks all, and an update
I am still rather mentally numb and lightly achy. Going to the doctor later when I get a rental car. Already did the insurance call, now waiting for a callback to make my recorded statement. Filed a report at the scene with a state trooper, of course. I will hold off specifics for now. But it was a hairy sonofafuck! But I am able to walk, and have enough presence of mind to log on here and share this February-suckin' news! Glad to be alive another day.

Thanks for the support, and I am glad you all survived your ordeals!

21. Just talked to my boss
She is glad I am okay, and did not anticipate my coming in today. I told her, without being too specific, that I cannot get a car until tomorrow, but she offered me a ride. She understands I may not be in until late morning if need be.

Talked to my Dad, and my nephew, which was a nice bright point. My Dad said it happened to him in Seattle, but a curb stopped him. (I don't remember that!) I emphasized that I am okay, and so forth. I hate burdening them with this news with all the crap they are dealing with right now. :-(

More later when we talk... I am feeling a bit achy, and will be taking it easy until I can get to the doctor.

Like I said, I downplayed the logistics. I made her laugh with some crack I made during the chat, but damned if I forgot it now. She wants me to call her at work no matter what I do, so she doesn't worry. That is good to know.

As for YOU, just go with the Friday arrival. I may be working extra to recover some of my lost time anyway. But I do love the thought! Don't go broke trying to negotiate with those hardheads! :loveya:

I am sorry that you had a wreck; my partner rolled the ambulance on black ice...yes--rolled. Thank God we didn't have a patient-it was just the two of us.

That fear of sliding stays with you for a few years, and when people glibly talk about driving in icy conditions, it will make you want to wring their fucking necks-

On the bright side; your girlfriend sounds like a total cutie, and I am glad to have someone to look forward to meeting!

This winter will be over SOON--and this summer is going to be a blast!

Thinking of you guys,

during a tropical storm on an eight-lane highway in Houston in rush hour in a rental car. When the car finally stopped spinning, I had gone from the fast lane to the slow lane and stopped dead still facing traffic. Not a scratch on the car, and when I managed to pull off the road and look at the tires... they had no treads at all.

Glad you're ok, by the way!

19. yeah and luckily a guard rail stopped the car. My knees were
shaking when I got out of the car. I was on an expressway entrance. The guard rail caught the car at the left tail light as I and the car went down a grassy embankment.

I am still terrified of driving on ice or snow and often go slower than other drivers. Although that can be dangerous I remember some jerk who sped past me at normal speed limit if there had been snow and he wound up upside down in his vehicle about a half mile ahead of me.

Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 03:27 PM by CatBoreal
...had my four year old and one year old in the back seat.

We spun into the oncomming lane then onto it's shoulder, bounced off a snowbank, then across both lanes of traffic and landed in the ditch on the opposite side of the road. We narrowly missed two cars coming at us at full speed.

All the while we were out of control, the only thing we heard from the backseat was a very calm: "What's happening Mommy?"

Glad you're okay.

60. Whoa... glad you're OK.
I've been in a car that did a bunch of 360's, but just on the freeway during rush hour traffic... and was lucky enough to only hit the median and no other cars.

Thank God you're alright. The only serious accident I was in, well, I wasn't really there. I had a seizure goin into work one morning (October 17 2001 actually) I crossed over 3 lanes of traffic going 45 and hit a brick wall. There were pieces of my car everywhere. Broke the front tierod and anxel. When I came to, I didn't remember the accident at all I actually tried to start the car and leave, knowing that I would lose my license (huh, hello??? there's a good reason for pulling my license!) but I actually went right into work. Wasn't even scratched. God watches out for drunks and epileptics I guess. That started the road to brain surgery for my seizures, so I guess it was a blessing--too bad they're back now, but such is life. I'm still around to enjoy my kids. Damn I'm glad you're OK!!!!!!!!!!!

edit for spelling

Driving down Rt. 101 in New Hampshire - been down it hundreds of times, never any ice (well cared for by NHDOT). On this particular morning, a Poland Springs water truck was sliding UP the hill on black ice, heading right for me, who was also on black ice. Two options - hit the truck, or try and maneuver the Nissan Pathfinder off the road. I chose option #2, but car refused to obey my request to slide gently off road at grade. Instead, it pitched right for an embankment - a steep embankment.

Over I went -the car flipped over 3 times "longways" (front to back). When it was done, the radio was still playing, and I unbuckled my seat belt to check the damage. As I got out, people were running down the hill, and the police and fire came soon after. Everyone assumed I had been very seriously injured - the car was totaled.

We traded that Pathfinder in the next year - for another Pathfinder. Hey, wouldn't you? :)

P.S. Glad you're OK and still part of the gang, and welcome to the I Hate Black Ice Club.

65. Not on black ice,
But I did go do the doughnut thing, multiple times, out on a frozen lake onetime. Had a blast doing it too. Of course this was after weeks of sub zero temperatures, when the lake was frozen solid, from bottom to top.

And I have also had the accidental spin out on ice also, scary as shit, but spending my life in winter climes, one gets used to handling a vehicle in the worst winter conditions.

Hey, it's starting to snow now! A fun drive home!

69. Had a little stare down myself just a little while ago. Bad snow/ice
storm here in Kansas City right now. My normal 35 min commute just took me 1.5 hours in the middle of the afternoon! Saw no less than 30-40 cars in ditches over a 20 mile stretch of highway and observed at least 6 of these spin-outs myself.

By the way...most of them were SUV's or trucks. Every asshole in an SUV or truck thinks they can and should drive as if it were normal conditions. Saw a Jeep Cherokee do at least 2 full spins in my rearview mirror, thought it ended up bumped against a highway sign. About 10 minutes later, this same asshole came cruising up behind me again - probably 3 times faster than everyone else was driving. I got over and let him pass. I got back in the lane behind him, giving myself some distance, and then I saw the car in front of the jeep spin-out, jeep slams on brakes and t-bones the car right in front of me. I carefully hit my brakes and tried to out-spin. I came to a stop mere inches from the bumper of the jeep. I was terrified of all the people behind me hitting their brakes and causing massive pile-up.

I've thought about contacting the highway patrol and letting them know how reckless the jeep was given the conditions.

First vehicle around the bend? A semi. Lucky for me he was a smarter driver than I was.

72. I did a 360 + 180 in a BMW M3 on an on-ramp to Hwy 85
My car was in the shop, so hubby took the truck to work, and I took the BMW. My 4 year old was in the back in his car seat. When the light changed, I turned onto the ramp, and gunned it (that's what hubby always does!!). The ramp was slick w/ earlier rain... I'm still not sure what happened, but I ended up facing back-wards in the ice plants.

I breathed for a few moments, as my son was yelling "again, again" (talk about surreal). I drove the car back towards the on-ramp... no one had seen it!! I got on the ramp and drove to Costco. When I got there I looked at the car.

Ice plant was STUFFED into 2 the 5" holes in the front (some sort of racing feature). I spent 15 or so minutes pulling it out by hand... Then I went shopping, to the carwash and back home. The car was in perfect condition, so I didn't tell hubby...

...until 2 weeks later when my guilt (and desire to talk about it) got the better of me. He agreed, nothing wrong..... but, damn, it was scary!!!:scared:

I'm glad to hear you seem to be OK, but be sure to get checked out. I'll bet you will find yourself a MUCH more cautious driver for awhile!

76. No, I pretty much went straight off the road and hit a tree.
I was lucky enough to slow the 1988 f-150 down to 25 or so before impact. I was able to drive it home after a farmer helped me pull the wheel well away from the wheel and pull the radiator away from the fan.

I know how lucky I am. So many people get serious, lifelong injuries when similar things happen. I could have picked a better way to get rid of an old car, though.

81. I almost died on black ice...
I was in high school and coming home from basketball practice. I went over this hill and as I got to the top of the hill my car started sliding out of control. I did a 360 and started heading down the hill and I saw a semi truck heading right for me. The semi driver pulled to the right and put his truck in the ditch. My car grabbed the pavement and slid off into a snow bank.

I was calm and cool while a truck pulled the semi out of the ditch; I talked to the driver and felt ok. When I got home and told my mom the story, I started shaking like crazy! Not a fun experience.

82. ohboy the adrenalin is flowing just reading this:
mine was on a back road between Springfield, Tennessee and my home town in Kentucky...in KY the road is 102, don't know what its number is over the line..

anyway, I was bombing along in my beetle, which had snow tires and breeko blocks in the trunk for xtra weight, and as I topped this little hill, what I thought was a black calf was standing in the road. I cut my wheel too hard which made the spin start, then I hit the black ice on the other side of the road and just kept spinning. I landed flat in a field, down about 15 feet from the road surface. Fortunately I missed the barbed wire and fence posts and a couple of small scrub trees on the way down. Dog was with me, he was not amused, but at least he did not poop all over the car.

Turns out what I thought was a calf was actually a good sized black dog. Even if I had hit the dog I would have ended up with a mess and quite likely came out better for having left the road; no injuries.

But even after I had a little repair done to the car, it never drove the same and was good incentive to replace it.

It is one scary thing to have your car totally out of control, and not one dam thing you can do about it.

Glad you are ok, take lots of IBuprofen, and hope you aren't too sore tomorrow. That shoulder harness may have strained all the muscles around your sternum, if so you will be sore as hell in about 24 more hours.

take care of yourself
