1. 'Bout 10-15 min by car
Pretty straight shot. Hawthorne St. even has it's own bridge. East side.

The Hawthorne shopping district is between about 20th and 39th on Hawthorne SE. The numbering of the streets starts at the river that divides East from West. The center of the downtown area is at 6th SW and Pioneer Courthouse Square.

So if you wanted to go from downtown to Hawthorne, you would hop the number 14 bus on Fifth. It will go across the Hawthorne bridge and then you can jump off wherever you see some interesting shops.

3. Lots of good eating places, lots of fun shopping.
There's a new spot between Powell's Books and the Pastaworks food store, called Pastiche. It's a coffee place by day and a wine bar by afternoon. Highly recommended. The desserts are like jewels, and scrumptious.

5. Perfect!
Thanks grasswire so much for the details. We are planning to go to a quick shopping trip to Portland from Seattle and would like to stay overnight to avoid too much driving in a single day.

9. what kind of shopping are you doing?
There also are a lot of stores downtown, and of course there are other shopping areas aside from Hawthorne.

Incidentally, at 37th and Hawthorne is an institution -- the Baghdad theater -- where you can get an outstanding pizza and microbrew while watching a film. Could be fun if you get tired of shopping.

And also incidentally, the Hawthorne bus runs VERY often (every 12 min. during the day and late evening) and there won't be any area where you should feel unsafe.

You can look at the bus routes by going to http://www.trimet.org.

7. What's that cool breakfast place ... Cup n' Saucer?
Is that the one I'm thinking of on Hawthorne? Or Flying Saucer? ... I used to live on Mt. Tabor near Hawthorne but now we're Westsiders and not as cool nor up on stuff ...

8. yeah, that's one...
...but I think some of the long-time eateries on Hawthorne have gotten kind of stale. There are some new spots, though, and that's always fun.

There's even some good stuff farther East on Hawthorne. At about 40th, is an eaterie called No Fish! Go Fish! and its specialties are outstanding soups and little savory fish-shaped waffles with fillings such as pepperoncini-cream cheese. Yum. A couple of doors East is a sushi place that's VERY popular. In the 4300 block is an outstanding coffee house called Common Grounds -- everything is baked fresh on premises, and the tuna sandwiches are DElicious, with capers, diced green apple, etc.

But most of the stuff visitors would want to see is west of 39th.

10. Three Doors Down is a good restaurant.
It's a little higher-end, but if Jono wants to have a nice meal without going downtown that's a good pick.
