Have you ever had an e-mail malfunction?
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 04:20 PM by BurtWorm
Like you accidentally sent someone something meant for someone else's eyes only because you weren't paying special close attention? I ask because I just sent my brother something I wouldn't want anyone else to see, but for a second, I had this horrible, horrible feeling that I replied to someone else who's e-mail I had open only *thinking* I was replying to him.

I know for a fact it's possible to make such a terrible mistake because I once replied, without looking at the sender, to an e-mail that I thought for a complicated reason was from my brother, saying something nasty about my mother and, lo and behold, after I sent it I thought to look at the sender only to discover it was, in fact, from my mother. True story. Horribly, horribly true story. :evilfrown:

1. Some DUMBASS thinks one of my email accounts belongs to her
A woman in New York State continually gives people my email as hers. My account is a common word that is also a surname, @myisp.com. I think she tells people her name is <her first name> space <her last name>@myisp.com

I know WAAAAAY too much about this woman and her extended family. I know their names. I know where several of them live and work. I know where she banks. I know what property they own, how much they paid for it, and when they bought it. I know which family members are homosexual. I know about her brother and his wife having problems trying to adopt a child. It's amazing how much people can find out about you if you are careless with email. Even more amazing that she's let it go this long and not figured out her mistake.

One of these days I'm going to call her on the phone and ask her to stop using my email account.

5. An easier way to handle it
...would be to send an email to all of her friends, telling them some scandalous, salacious news about "her" life. Take a plot line from that Desperate Housewives, and send an email to a fake address, with the REAL addresses of her pals in BCC (blind copy--that way they'll think THEY got the mail "by mistake"). You know, along the lines of: Oooh, Susie, don't tell anyone! When you walked in on me and the postman, I was mortified--but doesn't he have a fine package!!! I'll pay you anything, babysit your kids, but whatever you do, don't rat me out to (list names of friends and family). I've got them all conned into thinking I'm two steps shy of Mother Teresa!" You could do a half-dozen of these, with different scandals, all sent to different people in her sphere, and it would be interesting as hell to see what you got back, before someone finally mentioned it to her!

That's a bit evil, but not terribly so, especially if the plot lines are a little over the top--but not too much. Eventually they'd figure it out, and it would be quite a lesson learned!

6. I already updated the data in her online college alumni directory
Incorporated information like "I am careless with personal data and don't understand how to use email."

3. Not personally
but someone where I work was fired because she received an email from an executive, made a bunch of sarcastic comments, then hit 'reply' instead of 'forward'

4. A friend of mine once sent me a picture
He, his wife, and I took at the "Naked Beach" in Cozumel, and he panicked because his boss was one entry above me in his address book, and he wasn't entirely sure he'd clicked on me and not her! I was away for the weekend when he sent it, and when Igot online, I had a frantic message asking me if I'd gotten his email!LOL! He musta been sweatin' that one all weekend!

7. I did receive one once written by my ex-girlfriend to a mutual
acquaintance about me. It was pretty nasty and spiteful.

What was funny is that the mutual acquaintance got pissed when she received it and forwarded to me to let me know what was being said about me behind my back.

I haven't seen either of them in 4 years or more, but I appreciated the fact that this acquaintance who had no reason to let me know other than sheer honesty was willing to pass it on.

9. Miz t. did a few weeks ago.
E-mail to a cousin just UNLOADING on her (which she did richly deserve).
Mainly getting it out of her system late one night, and planned to write the "real", much more tactful e-mail the next morning. Decided to save the flamer for me to read later.

Now she knows that the outbox is NOT a good place to store drafts.
The last thing she saw when she shut down the computer was "Mail Sent", and it was.
Oh my.
