I'm married and we don't celebrate Valentine's Day.
Why? I kinda hate that holiday. It's so damn forced. I mean, if other people want to do all that stuff, have at it, none of my business.

But for us, no thanks.

I want my husband to buy me a card or flowers or whatever because HE wants to. I want to go out to eat with him or on a date with him because WE want to. And he wants me to buy things for him because I feel so moved, too.

Not because of the date on the calendar and some kinda weird crappy societal pressure.

The restaurants are always crowded, movie theaters are always crowded, hell we found out last year even BOWLING alleys are crowded.

We totally ignore it. I think it's a marketing scam, anyway.

1. That's okay.
The time around Valentine's day is very special for my wife and I. We first met on Feb 7. Our first "real" date was on Valentines Day (other than her coming over to my place and hanging out). Also, her birthday is on the 16th, so it usually ends up being one big old lovefest.

But you probably have other days that are special. Most couples do.

3. See but that's cool
because there IS some significance to it for you and your wife.

Short of that, I just don't get the whole "TODAY IS THE DAY YOU MUST BUY A $3 CARD AND SOME FLOWERS AND TAKE HIM/HER OUT TO EAT" pressure.

But in your case, I can see doing something special.

Our special days are in July and December.

4. Those $5 cards SLAY me.
FIVE dollars. For a card. They read it (sometimes in about ten seconds flat), say "Awwwww, thanks!" you get a hug or whatever. Five dollar card gets laid to the side, then later you are stuck with wondering what the hell to do with it.

I know a woman who throws cards she receives in the recycling bin the DAY she gets them. Harsh! LOL!

5. That's o.k. My boy and I will just have to use up all of your
Valentine's Day joy as well as our own.
I think we're going to the casino!!!

I love V-Day but I do agree that there shouldn't be just one day out of the year to declare your love for your partner.

Every day should be V-DAY!:hi:

We take care of two holidays on one day.

I agree with your "Every day should be V-DAY!" sentiment. Have a nice Valentine's day!

We try to keep it low key. Some chocolates and cards, a single rose, a nice dinner at home and then we exchange anniversary gifts.

19. So is ours!
We just got married last year. Valentine's day fell on a Saturday last year, and when we were looking to pick out a date, and saw that, we couldn't resist. My color for the wedding? Red, of course. My bouquet was a mix of red, pink and cream roses. I had the heart motif on everything, right down to our wedding favors (one of which was a really nice wine bottle stopper with a chrome heart swirlie finial on top). Everything looked pretty, and it was great fun.

I've always loved that day, even during the years I was alone. My dad always gave me a box of chocolates, one of those tacky, frilly heart-shaped boxes with the big plastic rose on it--and to this day, I love him to pieces for it.

So, I think it's a sweet day, whether you choose to join in the commercialism or not. It does have fascinating origins, too.

Your wedding must have been beautiful!
We got married on a Saturday as well. I wore a pale pink dress and we had pink roses and pink champagne! Very romantic.

12. Ok I don't get it. You can't make EVERY DAY special, then it wouldn't..
...really be special?

What is the big deal about one day taking the time to show the one you love a little extra love and attention?

I don't know about you but a little extra happiness and joy are sorely needed these days.

22. We don't try to make every day special
our main beef with Valentine's Day is that you HAVE to do those things on THAT day.

We reject that, that's all. We're perfectly loving to each other!

13. We don't celebrate it either
but then again, my birthday isn't a big deal either. I much prefer when he comes home with flowers for no reason because he thought "I'd like them" or when he fills my car up with gas because I was kinda low. I hate it when I'm supposed to do anything like that. It's one of the reasons Christmas is my least favorite holidays. If I ever see something and think of a certain person, I'll get it and give it to them. No matter what time of year it is. I hate walking the mall looking for a present because I'm "supposed" to buy a present. Sets my teeth on edge!

15. I agree with you 100 percent

I hate cut flowers, I don't like chocolate all that much, (I would much rather have a cheesecake all to myself), I don't like going out on holidays unless I don't feel like cooking, and and I absolutely hate cards. They always seem forced. Yes, indeed it is a marketing scam.

I also have the emotional baggage in that my parents were married on Valentine's Day, my 'father' left my mother weeks after I was born and provided no child support, leaving me to pretty much grow up on welfare. Valentine's Day has no meaning in my life.
Am I bitter about this holiday? you bet.

p.s.added on edit, I have been married to the same wonderful man 25 years this October, another day we don't mark with consumerisum. (is that a word?)

16. WE'RE WITH YOU!
I am married to a woman who actually gets MAD if I buy her roses...she doesn't like them and considers them a waste of our money and a waste of the plant's life.

Business keeps making up these days, too, just to push product. Sigh.

21. What's the big deal.
Valentines day is just another excuse to give money to the rich corp.that screw us all year long.An extra hug and a special kiss should be all that's required, anything more and you're insecure and need more help then you can get from a card.

28. I hate the way these holidays are celebrated.
It is all about the consumerism and how much you spend. Total BS. The only holiday without that connotation is st. patricks day (just go out and get drunk!)., though i guess you could include memorial and labor days too.
