"Today's the day they give babies away."
My grandfather used to say that on the mornings of more-or-less momentous events like Christmas, birthdays, etc.

I had no idea what it meant then and still don't.
Ever heard that?

Does your family have sayings that make no sense?

1. I remember the lyric from a song
This is the day we give babies away
with a half a pound of cheese
If you know any ladies who want any babies
send em along to me

But you can't have my baby- he's 6'3 and smells like....feet!

2. Kinda
Whenever we respond to a "threat" (like take out the trash, or I'll bust your head), we normally say, "Hope you brought your lunch." My sister said that once in response to some woman who told her that she was going to kick sis' ass. We always found it funny.

My best friend's grandfather used to say, "Hahsh-ka on the pah-ha," and claimed it was French for, "The cat pissed on the pump handle."

4. Many, here are two though..
"You're a butte-head" - created during a family roadtrip where my youngest cousin kept reffering to buttes as butts. He was then dubbed "butte-head" and it became a family insult.

"I'm cold as a monkey" - This one is a little messed up. My cousin is a nurse and she was working in the psyche ward for a while. One night she was taking care of an elderly woman with dementia and she told my cousin with abosolute seriousness (and by my cousins accout, the creepiest voice ever) "I'm cold. Cold as a monkey."; somehow my family just latched onto it. It was so surreal of a story and phrase...
