woohoo, looking like my first all-nighter for the semester!
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 01:23 AM by pres2032
I have no motivation to finish this paper i'm working on. I still have 3 and a half more questions to answer and it doesn't help that i'm addicted to DU.

edit: i need 3 and a half more answers... *bangs head on desk repeatedly*

5. hehe, are you joking?
all-nighters are the result of college students who wait till the night before to work on a ton of homework and so stay up all night working on it. Right now i'm the only one in the library comp labs.

2. I feel you
I'm doing my problem set for Genetics...I'm getting raped.

Bi305 Problem set #2- due in class Wednesday, February 9

1. A. Draw a map of rII-1, rII-2, and rII-3 mutations from the following data: (3 points)

Phage
titer on: progeny of progeny of progeny of
wt rII-1 x rII-3 rII-1 x rII-2 rII-2 x rII-3
K12 109 1.45 x 107 6 x 106 2.05 x 107
B 109 109 109 109

B. You identify a new rII mutant strain designated rII-4. It maps 3 map units from rII-1, 1 map unit from rII-2, and 5.9 map units from rII-3. Which one of these four mutant phage must carry a deletion in the rII region? Justify your answer. (1 point)

C. Could any of the other mutations on your map be deletions of more than 1 m.u.? If so, which one or ones? (1 point)

2. What is the minimum number of genotypic differences between two E. coli strains (other than one being the F+ donor and one being the F- recipient) that would allow you to demonstrate the process of conjugation? (1 point) Justify your answer.

How would this number change if the frequency of donor allele transfer were similar to the frequency of reversion of a mutant allele? (1 point)

3. You pregrow phage P1 on a Pyr+ Asp- Lys- (not necessarily the correct gene order) strain and transduce a Pyr- Asp+ Lys+ selecting for Pyr+. 1000 Pyr+ colonies are scored for the other two markers, giving the following results.

Phenotype Number of colonies

Pyr+ Asp+ Lys+ 619
Pyr+ Asp- Lys- 39
Pyr+ Asp- Lys+ 341
Pyr+ Asp+ Lys- 1

Using the cotransduction table provided below, produce an approximate map giving the order and map distances for these genes relative to the pyr locus. (3 points)

Cotransduction Table
cotransduction of 96% gives a map distance of 0.03 minutes
cotransduction of 62% gives a map distance of 0.3 minutes
cotransduction of 38% gives a map distance of 0.55 minutes
cotransduction of 34% gives a map distance of 0.6 minutes
cotransduction of 4% gives a map distance of 1.3 minutes
cotransduction of 1% gives a map distance of 1.6 minutes
cotransduction of 0.1% gives a map distance of 1.8 minutes

WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

4. Mine too, apparently.
Though you do get to a point of diminishing returns. I still have two research article analyses to complete by 5:30 tomorrow (PM, not AM!). I'll get the rest of it done tomorrow. I'm wiped. Put a fork in me.

AND to make matters worse, the research topic I really want to focus on for my thesis is one I am finding BUMPKIS on in all my searches. It's NOT that unusual of a topic. It's really pissing me off in an assy way.

to finish it.

that sucks when topics you search come up with nothing. it's so frustrating!

8. Here, you post what you are working on
and I'll look at it and you can get started on this for me:

EDUCATIONAL MEASUREMENT PROJECT

1. Test Plan

Plan a test for an instructional unit in any subject area and grade level.
Specify the name of the unit, subject area, and grade level.
List relevant TEKS and/or TAAS/TAKS objectives.
Create a matrix: Subject Matter (Topics/Subtopics) X Behavioral Change (Bloom=s Thinking Skill Levels).
Label subject matter rows as I, II, III, etc.
Label behavioral change columns as A, B, C, etc.
Record the number of test items in each cell.
Tally and record the number of test items for each row and column.

2. Sample Test Items

Create at least 20 finished test items that correspond to your test plan.
These 20 items should include at least 1 test item for each of the 5 kinds of test items studied--binary-choice (true-false), matching, multiple-choice, short answer, and essay.
Follow the item-writing guidelines provided.
Create directions for each section of test items, following the examples of test directions provided.
Label/code each question according to its corresponding test plan cell (e.g., I.A., I.B., I.C., II.A., II.B., II.C., etc.)
Provide an answer key.

3. Performance-based Assessment and/or Structured Interview

Describe, in detail, a restricted-response performance task, extended performance task, or structured interview that could be used with the same instructional unit associated with your test plan.
Justify your use of this assessment. What does it measure that the paper-pencil test does not?
State the directions to be given to students.
Describe the specific procedures to be followed by the teacher and students, noting when, where, and how the task and/or interview are to carried out.
Create a rating scale, rubric, and/or checklist to be used with the performance based assessment and/or structured interview; follow the samples provided.

9. heh, ok
Paul Collier states that "The true cause of much civil war is not the loud discourse of grievance but the silent force of greed." Does this theory also apply to other conflicts, such as interstate wars? Do you agree with his explanations on why the grievance theory has little empirical support? According to Collier, “severe political repression yields a lower risk of conflict than partial democracy”. Why do you think this is so?

Jean-Paul Azam describes peaceful African states as having two "inter-linked redistribution systems" that should create a balanced economy within a ‘triangular predation’ arrangement. Do you know of this being used anywhere else in the world and whether it is a successful/efficient method? Are these countries perhaps sacrificing long term prosperity for short term peace?

Indra de Soysa states in her article that rapacity is encouraged by an abundance of natural resources. Is it not possible for rapacity to occur in a country with scarce natural resources?

Does Gould’s data relate to civil conflicts and what data would you include in addition or in place of Gould’s data? Gould mentions the use of marriage as a method of dispute resolution in many societies. Do you think that this is a feasible solution for civil conflicts?

The reading from the Security Demographic presents two stress factors and data showing the interactions between demographic and non-demographic characteristics that increase the risk of civil conflict. In what ways are the youth bulge and rapid urban growth similar and how might their negative effects be avoided? What effects might international intervention have on a suffering country’s progress and is it imperative that others help?

Paul Collier, in the statement quoted above, mentions that greed is the motive behind civil wars. How is greed portrayed in other articles we've read this week? Might this relate to today's conflicts with terrorism? Is there a third alternative, or side, to the greed vs. grievance theory?

Using the field production equipment, you are to go an assigned location and capture 15 different sounds. Back in the studio, using these sounds, you are to create a two minute environment.

We had the Flash and DAT recorders demonstrated to us. Unfortunatley, the DAT recorder is out of commision.

And a less fun one for Comm theory due Next Tuesday.

Rules for all short paper assignments:
1. Paper must be between 2 and 3 pages in length, typed and double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12-point or Tahoma 11-point font. Set one-inch margins all the way around.
2. You must clearly incorporate course concepts into your paper, but do NOT quote the book or my lectures. You need to show me that you understand these ideas and do it in your own words.
3. DO NOT put your name on or in the paper. Instead, create a header with your student ID number and the page number flush to the right side of the page. DO NOT include a title page.

The following deductions will be taken:
a. Paper less than 2 pages or longer than 3 pages in length 1 full letter grade per page over or under the limit
b. Name on or in paper or no student ID on paper 1/3 letter grade each offense
c. No page numbers 1/3 letter grade
d. More than 2 spelling errors 1/3 letter grade
e. More than 2 grammatical errors 1/3 letter grade
f. Late papers  Grade reduced by 1 full letter grade for each day late. The first day starts at 5:10 pm on the day an assignment is due. An additional letter-grade deduction will be taken if you do not tell me your paper will be late before the deadline.
g. No contractions that are not part of direct quotes. 1/3 letter grade

1. Journal Article. After reading the article, “Factors that Influence Recipients' Appraisals of Hurtful Communication,” address the following questions: Due: T Feb 15, in class.

a. What is the primary theory set out by the author? What does it say about human communication? Use the terms used in the article (e.g., “concern-based appraisals”), then explain what you think those mean in your own words.
b. Is the theory best described as a rules, laws, or systems theory? Why?
c. Is this a good theory? Why or why not? Use the appropriate standards to argue your case. How does it meet or not meet the standards?
d. If the author chose to extend her knowledge about this phenomenon, what should be the next question she asks? Why?
