MAYDAY! MAYDAY! DOG COUGHING BRIGHT RED BLOOD!
I can't get him to the Asheville emergency clinic before it closes and the Brevard vet opens in 2.5 hours. It was copious for about 30 minutes. Stabilized now. 11.5 y/o dog in otherwise good health. He is somewhat bright and alert now. Somewhat of a cough with the blood episodes. ANY VETS OUT THERE?

1. Call Asheville and see if they'll stay open long enough for
you to get there.

2. I feel so bad for you and your dog
I don't know what could be wrong with the poor poochy, I just didn't want to leave you all alone. Did you try to google on it and see if you could find something? Are you sure it's blood and the dog didn't get into something? My daughter's dog ate a whole bag of gummy bears once, that didn't work so well! Poor thing just laid around, threw up, and laid around some more.

6. I did a google search about bright red frothy blood
Most of it has to do with people, one was for ferrets and others were for what to look for when hunting.

Consensus for bright red frothy blood for all (ferrets and humans were listed) is:
Injury to lungs caused by a rib fracture.
Ulcer perforation or bleeding ulcer.

I'm not a vet but is there anyway you can call the Brevard vet and have them meet you on an emergency basis? I live in a rural area and it's not uncommon for our vets to be oncall 24/7.

8. My dog had that
She had stomach ulcers and liver disease. They put her on some drug that cost eighty eight bucks a month and gave her six months to live. The pills made her bleed again, she had to return yet again to the ER and was being watched in case she needed a blood transfusion. She managed to get by without one.

I talked to another vet about holistic alternatives to the drug she was on, not because I am especially anti-manufactured drugs, but because what she was getting was fucking her up worse, and I wasn't going to keep giving it to her. I ended up putting her on a regimen of pepcid ac daily and milk thistle. She never had another episode. She lived for two years more and was quite active and comfortable until she died.

9. Sirius is in the animal hospital. He is a sick puppy ...
His thoracic cavity is so full of fluid that the heart does not show up on x-rays. The best scenario is that it is doggie pneumonia. However, the blood work shows only slightly elevated white count and his temperature was only a slight bit above normal. The other scenarios include congestive heart failure or tumor. They are giving him massive diuretics now to pull away the fluid from the chest cavity. They will do another x-ray later this afternoon to look at the heart and for tumors. If necessary, he will get a sonogram tomorrow morning. Antibiotics were started this morning, too.

Thanks for all of you DUers concern. I am, to say the least, wigged-out. I'll post updates as I get them. Driving back out here to the mountain I decided to approach this as just an old-age illness that will pass with proper care. If I think about the other alternatives I'll go nuts.

28. I'm sorry. Sending good wishes to you and Sirius
Demo Tex, no matter what the diagnosis, Sirius will be OK as long as he has you by his side. He also may have more time left than you or the vet could ever fathom.

My dog Dale had a horrible cough and was diagnosed with a heart based tumor with an ultra sound. It was wrapped around his aorta and taking up 2/3 of his heart and inoperable. The vet tried diuretics (Lasix) to decrease the fluid in his lungs, but the x-rays showed the fluids did not decrease, but his coughing was 100% improved. It stopped.

The vet thought he would live only a couple of weeks. Dale had another good 18 months. We increased his Lasix every time his coughing got worse. He went from 12.5 mg/day and ended up at 1000 mg/day (250mg. 4xday). (That much Lasix required potassium supplements. He did pee in the house, but we just put papers down and he used those.)

Eventually, I was having his abdomen drained 2 -3 times a week. They inserted an IV needle and drained out nearly a liter of fluid each time. And Dale never minded. He was a cheerful dog (a Terrier mix from the local Humane Society). He loved going to the vet. He knew he was getting good care. (We also gave him two to three good walks a day.)

We knew when Dale stopped eating that would mean he would no longer be able to take his Rx's. (We always hid them in canned cat food. We never forced the pills down his throat.) He lived for a week beyond that, but his breathing got so difficult we had to put him to sleep. I wished and prayed that he would just not wake up, but they never want to leave you either. He was 13 years old.

I know Sirius is in good and loving hands and you'll Keep him comfortable and by your side. Like I said, he may not be ready to go yet, he just needs you to take special care of him.

I'll keep you and Sirius in my thoughts.

I'm sure you are beside yourself with worry. It's odd how they carry our hearts in those furry paws--isn't it?

I'm sure your vets will do all they can, and I have no doubt that you will do everything you can to help your guy feel better.

I'm betting his nose is cold and wet again really soon!

36. Some good news from the vet on Sirius.
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 08:41 PM by DemoTex
The vet called me about 45 minutes ago to report that he had just walked Sirius at the clinic. Doc said that Sirius was bright, alert, and responsive. Sirius's appetite was hearty and his poop was normal. There is no longer a cough and no blood. He thinks that by tomorrow morning Sirius's thoracic fluid will be dissipated enough to get good x-rays of the heart for congestive heart failure and for tumors. If the x-rays are inconclusive, they will have ultra-sound studies done.

I was wigged out this morning. Thanks for the support, dear hearts.

Mac
