Enthusiasts in battle to halt production of feature film
ROBERT VAUGHN survived killer bees and radar-evading bats in his role as Napoleon Solo. But today, the character he created in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. faces a fate worse than death as a result of his muddled relationship with a British director.
The hit 1960s series is about to be remade as a feature film by a man who grew up believing himself to be Vaughn’s son.
Matthew Vaughn learnt that the actor was not his father only on the eve of his wedding three years ago to Claudia Schiffer. Robert Vaughn, who had been in a relationship with Matthew’s mother, Kathy Ceaton, produced evidence proving that she could not have had his child. Robert and Matthew are said to have been estranged ever since. Matthew retains Vaughn’s surname for business purposes only. Now fans of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. believe that his film will transform the series beyond recognition. The director told Variety magazine that “the name is the only thing that’s staying”.
“I’ve always wanted to make a spy movie, and our idea is like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” he said. “The studio is giving us a lot of freedom to break the rules.” His comments provoked a backlash from fans, who complained to Lindsay Dunlap, owner of the underlying rights. More than 3,000 people have asked her to intervene in the project, which Vaughn has not yet signed. He was offered it by Warner Bros after being turned down as a director for the next Harry Potter film.
