Does anyone know anything about refrigerator repair?

I just spent 3 hours cleaning out my freezer, the darn icemaker overflowed and turned the entire freezer into a single ice cube. The fridge is only 6 years old and this is the second icemaker- it's only 2 years old. I have had the icemaker repaired twice since it was installed at $100 a pop. Now the filtered water line to the dispenser also seems to be leaking. When you dispense water, a huge puddle form behind the fridge. The fridge works well otherwise.

I was planning to replace the fridge in the next few years, I just didn't want to do it right now. Is it worth repairing, how much work is entailed?

if it's not a designer fridge it shouldn't be too bad.

What would be worse is if it just gets "fixed" again, leaks again, causes water damage, thousands of dollars of repair bills, etc. etc.

You're better off getting a decent new one now.

line and use the old style ice cube trays. I did that until I bought a new fridge. I als bought a bottom freezer and I like it

I've never had an icemaker. No icemaker, no worries!

That said, there is a float valve in the icemaker (kind of like the one in yer toilet) that is either not seating or has a bad float. Not to bad to fix, prolly much less than a new fridge.

Then you'll have to let the guy put on a new filter and fittings to fix that leak, too.

9. It sounds like a lost cause.

It sounds like there's a bad fill valve but it could be some plastic piece is cracked. If you've tried to have it fixed once and failed then I wouldn't try again.
If you still feel like trying you could pull the ice maker out and inspect it your self. It shouldn't be that hard just make sure you pull the plug before you try to remove it. Parts can be found at any appliance parts store.
The water line should be an easy fix so if you can't fix that then give it up. Some things aren't worth spending your money on. If the refrigerator works fine without the ice maker than disconnect it and buy bagged ice or use an ice cube tray.

11. I have taken the ice maker out, it seems fine, the problem is that one

of the fill tubes tends to freeze up (or so the last repair person told me). We did the bagged ice and tray thing for a while last fall before I made my last attempt to repair the icemaker. It worked for about a month and then started overflowing again. I think that's what we'll do until we decide to replace it. I am getting tired of thawing out the ice block and losing food.

16. There may be a bad defrost element or timer.

If you have a manual that gives you a good view of what your dealing with try going that route. The timer is usually located in the bottom down by the compressor. There could be lots of defrost elements in various places. If there's a bad element you may or may not be able to replace it

The icemakers do. Its probably easiest to just get a replacement icemaker and pop the old one out and put the new one in. I did it, relying on the instructions that came with the new one.

But seriously, home refrigerators are remarkable, I can't remember the last time I heard the words "broken refirgerator."

17. I had a similar problem...

I kept getting these huge blocks of ice on the bottom of my fridge and could not figure out what was going on. I did a little research on the web and looked at my ice maker. My problem was the temperature was too cold and the drain line kept getting plugged up. This caused the water to back up and freeze, creating a huge mess.

Maybe the setting on your freezer is too cold? I lowered the temp on my freezer just a little and have not had a problem since. Also, make sure that the fill line to your ice maker is clear.
