Poll question: Should women be allowed to run for President?
I say no. I don't have anything against women, and there are plenty that'd make fine Presidents, but think of President Ann Coulter. That's simply too much of a risk to take. So I'd prefer that women not be allowed to run for President until Ann Coulter's dead.

(note: very heavy sarcasm for those who can't catch it)

1. They are already allowed to
But we aren't ready for a female leader yet.

Won't be for quite awhile either.

18. "we" as in who?
I would be ready, if the nominee were proven to be an effective leader, with good ideas. If Granholm were natural born, I'd vote for her for example (btw, I hope if a dem wins in '04, they'd consider her for attorney general).

as in Americans and Canadians.

Or pretty well any country in the 'western' world. There are only a couple of exceptions, the most notable being the UK.

23. Not a nationally elected one
PM Mulroney announced his retirement, and Kim Campbell won the leadership of the party. She functioned as PM until the election was called and went down to a major defeat, retaining only 2 seats in the House, and losing her own riding.

48. Duh. That wasn't 'cause of Campbell...
She didn't cause that; Mulroney did. Like I said before, you must not be very old, because I remember being there and voting in that election, and believe you me, Mulroney was very much on people's minds when they consigned the Federal Tories to the dumpster of history, face-first. She was just the unfortunate patsy who wound up taking the fall for it. Not that, I think, if she'd been re-elected as the PM she would have done much good, but her getting thrown out had nothing to do with her being female and had everything to do with Meech Lake, NAFTA, and the general pro-American, Reaganesque policies that make Mulroney a curse-word even today. ISTR that people were very *pleased* with her becoming the first female PM ever, as a contextless fact, but Mulroney's evil deeds did for her, kind of the same way Teflon Mike Harris' (ptui!) bungling and corruption did for Blackout Ernie Eves.

He had retired.

So if you were voting against Mulroney, then you should indeed be saying 'duh' because it suits your level of knowledge.

Canada's already HAD a female PM, thus proving that Canada is WAY ahead of the US in gender equality: An incompetent woman finally rose to the top spot in the nation, when incompetent men had been holding the spot periodically for years. Unless of course you don't want to admit that KIM CAMPBELL (hello?!) was actually female!

37. this was never about joy or joking for joke's sake
it was an analogy to the argument that foreign born should be disenfranchised to prevent Arnold from running.

the purpose was never to be funny, make light of a situation, or anything of the sort.

I see 4 votes. About the same level of that as from lurking Freepers.

Do you think there are any DUers who would seriously answer "no".

by the way, this wasn't really a "joke", in that jokes are intended to be funny. This was not.

42. Actually
I do think there are some. And nearly 20% is a whole slew. No the joke part was having people actually vote on it to let the 'results' be shown. You, yourself have stated that you don't believe that DUers would vote this way - but you invited it - and they have. That is the 'joke' - an opportunity to send a funny little message out to the female Duers.

but I'll tell you if it ever happens Ann is more likely to become Pres than Arianna Huffington, or Barbara Boxer, and Arnold will be Pres before Caeser Chaves, which is why I consider this a fairly trivial and unimportant issue in the scheme of things.

I'm not disenfranchising anyone. The results of this poll will have no bearing on society at all. Perhaps I should've made it a typical post instead of a poll, but the fact that 2 lurking Freepers voted no is not something to be so concerned about. They vote for Bush in presidential polls here too.

44. It's interesting to look at the countries that have had female leaders
(including elected leaders) and see how many are extremely conservative, even misogynistic, societies - and yet many pundits in the U.S. are convinced that a woman still has no chance of winning a Presidential election. I can only shake my head in bafflement. I mean, PAKISTAN had a female leader. INDIA. PHILLIPPINES. ISRAEL. Dozens of others. Yet here we sit, building that bridge to the 19th century anew every day...
