My friend in NYC got a Powerbook-that new one, and needs to find
a friendly Apple users group somewhere. She's moving off her clunky PC (Windows ME) and has that nice shiny new thing Apple just put out. She wants to know things like virus/firewall stuff-cool stuff and things like that

Any suggestions, you Apple lovin' DUers? I have told her she'll wonder how she ever managed the PC thinger once she gets used to the Apple thingy!

3. she doesn't need virus check, nor a firewall.
mac osx comes with a fairly good firewall standard.

if she's looking for cool stuff, both macupdate.com and the apple site have AWESOME programs to try out. all sorts of freeware stuff to make using the mac easier. sizzlingkeys is my favorite, she'd probably like it. (a global hotkey program)

otherwise, if she wants more info, pm me and ask!

5. cool-thanks
she's a little trepidatious about technology...I have no idea why-she's brilliant and once she gets going she'll do well-I know the PC was a problem and I keep telling her I have never seen ANYONE on DU say "Shit. I wish I had my PC back" after getting Apple product. I'll copy and paste this to her and if she has any questions, I'll let you know.

4. try this
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 09:52 PM by btmlndfrmr
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/find/

For now:

To turn on firewall, Go to Preferences,(under the Apple) then click on sharing, click on firewall, check turn on firewall.

Also, not be a bad idea to have her run software updater, also in preferences, to make sure she has all the security updates. Check appropriate updates, and stir (run)

Viruses are not not yet on OS X, still Microsoft Word macro virus stuff may transfer, Virus software or a broader utility still recommend.

9. Here are some great Mac-oriented online sites/forums...
www.macrumors.com < the biggest and best

www.appleinsider.com < smaller, but still great

www.spymac.com < kind of the pits, but does the job
