Anyone else have E's instead of F's in school???

Or is that just a Michigan thing? My kids have an ABCDE grading system. :shrug:

4. I got some "E"'s in Elementary school

But "E"'s meant Excellent, followed by S's for Satisfactory, N's for Needs Improvement, and U's for Unsatisfactory. I thought maybe "E"'s weren't used in the A-B-C-D-F system 'cause they might get mixed-up with this other grading system.

13. Same Here... Our Teacher Wrote The Grades BY HAND....

No disposable computer printouts. In fact, I think my mom still has all of my original elementary school report cards from the 1960's.

We must be from a different generation than most. I got those grades 5 decades or more ago! I also remember getting "O" for outstanding! But I also gave the grades you mentioned, too, as a teacher back in the 60's and 70's. At one time we had to write "narratives" to report the students' progress! Talk about a chore!

about those long report cards. My sister is an Elementary teacher and the report cards she has to fill out for the kids every six weeks must be four or five pages long! I remember getting one of those in-depth report cards back in Kindergarten; I got marked down ("S-") in Conduct for interrupting other students too much! I obviously got this problem under control 'cause my senior year of high school I was voted "Shyest!"

15. Texas here...

My kids academic grades are on the ABCDF scale...conduct, handwriting, music, art, and PE are on the ESNU scale. (5th and 3rd graders) Makes sense to me.

Although I guess there are a few other states that have it.

I remember the dreaded "N"; I learned of its evil ways through being graded on handwriting as a first grader.

18. My daughter has managed "U" a couple of times this year

She knows she's in for it then...She has a sheet that comes home with her conduct grade EVERY day.

The system varies from school district to school district.

I'd prefer we go to a system showing subject achievement rather than test results. Instead of training children to get good grades, we should orient them toward mastering subjects in a series of steps.

The current grading system isn't really that great.

9. My sister's hiigh school had E and F grades

She moved with my mother and step father to a larger city and went to one of their public schools. The "E" grade was a passing grade, but students were given a 0.0 when it was averaged with the rest of their grades. An F was the failing grade.

Years ago I was graded on a system that included E's. But the E stood for excellent and was equivalent to an A. There were still F's for failure. I think this system has gone out of fashion as folks realized that it doesn't really matter what you call them.

back in the late 1950s-1960s.

E = excellent.

VG = very good

G = good

U = unsatisfactory

F = failure

Another thing is that I lived in Grand Rapids, and we like would almost never get a snow day called! I think we had maybe two in my thirteen years of public schooling.

thing,..but the whole state does it?
