Letterman: "Condoleeza Rice has warned Iran to stop its

nuclear program or face the next step. . .

And the next step, of course, being fabrication of evidence,
and then we march right in. . ."

2. And get your asses handed to you
I think the US is expecting Iran to be like Iraq...and it isn't.

5. Here's the scary part . . .
Clearly we can't "march right in" -- there's a shortage of marchers available to the task. Cruise missles and the like won't do it -- Iran's nuclear facilities are hardened. Not to mention that we don't know precisely where they are.

So what weapon do you choose when 1) the target is hardened 2) you know only approximately where it is 3) you're wicked stupid 4) you don't give a f*ck about collateral damage?

Nukes of course!

Does anyone here think Bush would draw the line at the use of nukes?

6. Yeah, and it's weird because I

grew up in the "duck and cover" Fifties but I now think we have a better chance of being incinerated in my lifetime than I did when we were all scared of the Reds.

7. My 80 yr old father says the same thing.
He took up ham radio back in the 50's due to nuke fears, but says right now is scarier (nukes and the general USA political climate) than it ever has been. He doesn't post on forums and is laying low, not like me. He probably doesn't have nightmares of being disappeared like I do but I need to ask him that.

8. My husband and I remember

thinking that our parents and other adults would take care of us if the worst happened. My dad was military and worked with civil defense so I knew more about bomb shelters than most. In fact, my dad trained military personnel in atomic, biological & chemical warfare -- not the how-to but the how-to survive.

But my daughter and her husband both remember being very frightened as children by Seventies television programs about nuclear war, most of which reviewed the dangers of the Fifties and early Sixties. Apparently the updated propaganda was more frightening in its realism than living through it was. Or they had less reassuring parents!

It would be interesting to hear more of your dad's thoughts from the perspective of being an adult back then. Our parents are long-dead now.

11. You forget about the IDF....
if the US can get ISRAEL to do the attacking then that frees up some US servicemen.

16. I can see Bush cajoling Israel to attack what they think
are Iran's nukes...then there will be full scale Arab/Israeli war. The fundies don't care about that though because in their view it means Jay-sus is a comin' back!!!

15. Not to mention
a nuke could be detonated in any of the fledgling nuke-you-lar nations, and be called a nasty "accident."

19. How many nuclear powers are there?
Now, how many of those would take our side in a nuclear exchange with Iran? I count exactly one: Israel.

Would I want to get the other ten, most of whom have missiles that can reach Washington, really pissed off at me? Oh my goodness no, not even if I had the wholly unwarranted self-confidence of Donald Rumsfeld.

Emperor C-plus Augustus might think he can beguile England again, and bully and/or ignore France, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Ukraine (and who am I forgetting? Poland? :P ) but I think if it came to that there would be a palace coup: not everybody in the government is a rapturist.

Weird to think that our future might depend on a military coup, however. We really have become a banana republic.

That's hilarious. I didn't think the late night talk show guys talked politics. Too alienating to too much of the audience.

Anyone see the episode last Friday with Franken?

It was BRUTAL.

Dave has taken the Carson mantle that was bestowed on him last week and ran with it.
