drugs that are metabolized in the kidneys leave metabolites in the urine that can be detected by drug tests.

not that the drug tests actually detect these metabolites, not the actual drug. anything that produces these metabolites can cause the test to test positive. the classic example is poppy seeds, which produce the same metabolites as all poppy-derivate drugs (morphine, heroin, etc.) the tests are (hopefully) calibrated so that only a massive amount of poppy seeds will lead to a false positive.
