Fish tacos!
OK folks, here's a question for you:
The Prophetess is Catholic, so today being Friday, no meat for dinner. I want to take her out for fish tacos since she's never had them before. Does anyone know any restaurant chains that do fish tacos-like Applebee's (they don't) or chains like that? Canton is not far and they have all the major chains, so if there is a restaurant chain that does carry them, we should be able to find it.

4. A taco, with fish in it instead of beef or chicken.
Very popular in California, believe it or not.

5. Shows what you know!
Some grilled or lightly fried mahi-mahi in corn tortilla with some greens and salsa is very tasty.

20. interesting...
grilled sounds good, fried not so much...

Corn tortilla sounds better than flour.

How far east have these things made it; I'm always Chicago or east, and i have never heard of this - even when i lived in NYC.

23. Started in California, but I get them here in Texas.
The fried mahi batter is really light, like a tempura batter. But I prefer grilled myself.

7. What?
Yeah, fish in a taco. Been doing it in San Diego for years.

Better than ground beef (prions, anyone?). It's a classic here.

It's usually a beer battered filet or two, with fixings (sour cream, lettuce, etc.) Damned fine food.

11. I prefer broiled fish tacos
Although the fried ones are good too.

Mahi Mahi is my fav, followed by Swordfish.

And either tomatillo or mango salsa to top it off.

How bout you?

40. Fried
Never had grilled, just isn't proper. Fried is the way they started, especially in a beer batter.

Tomatillo salsa. That mango stuff is too yuppie.

Mahi mahi is the best fish for it, though, I do agree.

I've got classic fish tacos available at a little hole in the wall FANTASTIC Mexican place within walking distance. As NSMA, she knows.

42. That's where I had fish tacos, San Diego! Awesome city!!!
And the fish tacos weren't bad, either!:9

Here in the North Country, we have to make do with Taco Bell, no fish on the menu.;(

BTW, when I had fish tacos, they used shredded cabbage, rather than lettuce, and some sort of special sauce, unique to fish tacos. I went light on that.

13. You need to try a place
called Wahoo's in California. Fish tacos are great and very healthy. The fish is grilled not fried and served with green cabbage and their own salsa with sides of black beans and white rice. Don't knock what you haven't tried unless you really hate fish.

26. Rubios es muy bueno
I Second that Rubio's recommendation! Tres Pesky Combo por favor.

This is from an avowed non-fish eater, Rubios tacos are great, no "fishy" flavor, just tasty chunks of battered or fresh white fish with a lime to sqeeze over it.

DRAT now I must go get some. never read DU while hungry, it will mess up your afternoon plans.

mmm fish tacos

I asked my Mexican friend about them. She had never eaten them or heard about them being eaten in Mexico. She said that they were invented by Californian white yuppies.

41. They're a local Baja specialty -
Here in San Diego, they started out in the US side at Roberto's (local walk-up/drive through taco shop chain that was good up until the dad died and the sons and nephews went into a turf war over the 32 sites), Nati's (Ocean Beach) and Chevy's (not the chain, but a local restaurant from the 40's close to NASSCO and the 32nd st. Naval base) as a flaked, grilled whitefish marinated in Cervesa, sweet chili powder, and lime with Pico de Gallo salsa in a corn tortilla. Sometimes, you could get a deep-fried chimichanga like version, according to some of the old-time shipyard I used to work with.
In the 70's, Ralph Rubio (Mexican-Californian with family on both sides of the border, like many around here) supposedly came back from a surfing/fishing trip to Ensenada with a fisherman's recipe for a fine corn meal/beer-batter fry treatment to the standard marinated fish chunks (what was left over from the fillets cut and processed for sale on the boats) with cabbage rolled into a white corn tortilla and started his taco stand with that as a main product to bypass the local taco shop competition, which was verging on gang war by that time. His beer-batter fish taco became the "standard" for Fish Tacos as we know it now.
If the "fry" idea was a local idea that developed down there or the influence of the old fashioned Southern fish fry as people have moved back and forth across the border over the past hundred years, I can't tell you. That's a job for a gastro-anthropologist...

Just a bit of background there for you folks that might feel the need to know the history of your food.

Haele

37. I thought fish tacos was a West Coast thing?!
I had them in California and loved them. I had them, my first night there, at a Holiday Inn bar that was open late, and still serving food, and at a family-run Mexican place. But they were on most menus that I ran across.

If you're looking for a chain, I'd try Red Lobster, unless they're still advertising on Limbaugh. Look in the phone book yellow pages under "restaurants" or "seafood." If it has to be fish tacos, call ahead and ask if they're on the menu.:-)

But I live in the Northeast and I sure have never seen them around here. At Applebees, the only fish available is fish so hot that it is inedible, at least to me. That is not my favorite place. I can't find anything to eat there.:-(

Hope they were good. They really are the best dish, my fave right now -- just found a lil mom and pop Mexican place in my small southern town where they serve them. Super tasty treat.
