Protesters Dressed As Slaves Gather Outside Bank One Office

NEW ORLEANS - About a dozen protesters -- some dressed as slaves, demonstrated Thursday outside the Bank One office on North Broad Street. The protesters take issue with what they feel is Bank One's involvement with slavery more than a hundred years ago.The group has filed suit demanding reparations from the bank.

Bank One admits that a predecessor bank allowed the use of 13,000 slaves as collateral on a loan and actually took ownership of 1,200 slaves when the loan defaulted.

But bank officials say they have already apologized and set up a $5 million college scholarship fund for black students.

The protesters call that amount a joke. They're insisting that the bank meet with them to negotiate a better settlement.

On the bright side, this was the board I used to post before DU. I got so angry arguing with them I searched around and found DU.

1. My ancestors (the Cajuns) were forced out of their homes

at gunpoint by the British and put on boats. The ones that didn't starve to death made it to Louisiana.

Do I still live with the legacy of that injustice? No. It was a horrible, horrible thing, but it has not impacted my life whatsoever.

Now if my ancestors were enslaved for hundreds of years, refused education, then after they were set "free," were denied the right to vote, work, etc. until they became wrapped into a cycle of poverty that lasts all the way up until present time, then YES, that impacts someone's life currently.

That's why I agree with reparations of some sort.

And to point out that most anti-reparations people don't even understand what exactly the pro-reparations people are calling for. Of course, in my experience, the pro-reparations people don't do a very good job of explaining it.
