I am watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I still can't get over Johnny Depp in it. He was not only amazingly beautiful but also acted flawlessly. Just astonishing.

1. I haven't seen it yet, but I take it that you recommend it...
What's the premise? (I don't get out much, ya know)

5. Oh you gotta read the book, Kleeb
:D

F&L LV and F&L on the Campaign Trail '72 are required reading! :D

Seeing it is good, but to get the full force of Hunter, it's best to read him. His voice is so strong.

6. Lemme get started on what I got first
I have so many books, so little time. I am gonna be starting on Gideon's Trumpet tonight, even though I got that book two months ago.

14. Drop what you're starting
Read it. And don't buy into that shit about "It's so cool these guys are ripped the whole time." Shit that all the stoners and posers will feed you.

It's about more than that.

8. The premise?
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 08:18 PM by chascarrillo
Hunter S. Thompson goes to Las Vegas to cover a marathon desert motorcycle race for Rolling Stone. Reads (and looks) better than it sounds.

Heh heh heh...

Probably the best adaptation of any "unfilmable" novel - Gilliam really pulls out all the stops (by contrast, Cronenberg's adaptation of JG Ballard's "Crash" left much to be desired). It's a visual wonder, with excellent performances by Depp and del Toro.

2. Oh God! Do you have the Criterion edition?
Hunter does a play by play on the criterion edition. Listening to that, I appreciated Johnny's mimmicry even more. :D

4. It's a wonderful performance.

Johnny Depp was not the first choice I would have had to play Hunter S. Thompson, but he is quite good in this role. I like Johnny Depp because of the chances he takes in some of his roles...what actor would have played Ed Wood, Jr (truthfully portraying his trsnsvestism), for instance?

But you can't just single out Depp in "Fear and Loathing"...Benecio Del Toro was very good in it, also.

12. I didn't want to see it at first, but now I want to see...
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I love the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and didn't think anyone could do justice to it. But now I'm interested....it's supposed to be as dark as the orignal story. Plus, Tim Burton is directing...and Depp and Burton work so well together.

Depp always plays interesting. Edward Scissorhands for one example.

10. We were somewhere around Barstow .....
On the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a little lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going around a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are all these goddamn animals?"

Best first paragraph of a book ever! :D
